I've noticed when the Maverick was introduced in 1970 that the 200 engine produced 120 hp and 190 ft/lb torque. By 1972 those numbers dropped to 91 hp and I believe 150 or so torque. A Ford technical guide also says the engine was developed from the Falcon and the early 200 six. Do I have a more powerful engine that was detuned by a few mods or is it a weak engine altogether? Is the 1972 Maverick 200 very similar to other Ford Six's or drastically different? It has a 1BBL carb and a 1V. Say I changed that to a 3BBL and 2V...would it be a huge increase in horsepower? Then I put on headers, better exhaust system. In the future possibly strengthening the stock internals and adding a turbo. Can you get 200-250 hp out of a six like that? Thanks.

They changed the way they measure HP in 72 from gross to net.

The 70 and 72 engines are virtually the same.

To get over 1 hp per cubic inch on that moter would take some radical work, as the intake is integral to the head.

A stock 200 only makes about 77 hp at the wheels but It isn`t too hard to get 200 - 250 hp out of a turbo 200 with a 350 or a 500 cfm holley carb APR rod bolts and a little porting to the head . here is a great place for the ford I6 lovers www.fordsix.com and for parts www.fordsixparts.com www.cliffordperformance.com

if you have the money anything can go faster, if you want to build your six you can probably get around 300hp out of it, but your talking alot of money(ie. nos or turbo charging) it would be less money and more power to go the 8 route.

NOt sure what you mean,1bbl is the same as 1v,they both mean the same thing.....`1-barrel carburetor..............your basically saying you want to put a 3-barrel carb and a 2-barrel carb on at the same time????

Yes, it IS a VERY nice boat anchor....still a boat anchor though. Spend the same amount of money on a 302 and it would blow it away with power to spare...

Man, all of the beautiful duct work to get the gasses through the carb and you run smack dab into that lousy factory intake with the 90 degree bends.

thats more like 45* bends and that part realy helps to build power the stock bottom end of a 200/250 is stronger than v8s as far as money go`s he would have had to spend MORE money to do that to a v8, that "log" intake isn`t holding back too much power he was still spinning the tires in 3rd gear with a c4

Keep the 200 and beef it up, then when people see it ,they say thats awsome instead of did you put that v8 in that maverick, its a72 maverick, I have a 200 in my 70 mav never take the orginal motor out leave it alone and be diffrent.

It's a given fact that you will never get the same amount of HP out of a 6 as an 8. Preach it all ya want, but to most of us it's common sense, and it certainly isn't hurting the constantly growing market for 6 cylinder peformance parts.

It all depends on what you want to get out of it. If you want to be diffrent, build a 6.

But it's not a grabber v-8 its a 72 maverick. It will be worth more oringanl than dropping a v8 in it to a maverick enthuist.
