I have a 71 maverick with a 302, MSD ignition, MSD coil, duraspark distributor, and a 61 amp alternator with external voltage regulator, and the typical starter relay. I just completed rebuilding/installing this engine and just fired it up yesterday with success. I ran it for about 30 seconds until I turned it off. However, I noticed when I cranked it over for the second time, I decided to quickly turn the ignition off to check something else out and (my problem) the engine kept trying to turn over as if I was still trying to start it with the ignition off. I quickly ran and disconnect the battery (+) to shut it off and it did. So, I'm not sure what the issue may be here. I believe I connected everything right because I was able to turn it on the first time without issue. This has NEVER happen to me before. Another question thought, if the engine continues to try to crank over (starter engaged) and the engine starts and runs, will the starter continue to be engaged to the flywheel at the same time the engine is running or will it disengage? How does one know if it's disengaged after engine is running with this issue? I would think if the ignition is cranking, it will not know when to stop cranking even after the engine is running. Please help and thanks everyone for your help.
Low battery voltage will make the starter solenoid stick. Give the battery a full charge and try it again. If that doesn't fix it, try changing the solenoid first before moving on to the ignition switch.
spray wd-40 on the ignition switch(work it loose) thats on the steering column/post or replace it... also spray and clean the key recepticle and tumbler... good luck...
sounds like it's the key ignition cylinder problem. if it was fine the first time you turned it on then I doubt your solenoid would have a problem.
Had my Sprint do the same thing to me last week.Battery was low.Next day...car wouldnt shut off with key switch...Cleaned the ignition switch on the column. All is now right with the world. If the starter engages and starts the engine but does not disengage...it will continue to crank the engine weather its running or not.
If it continues to crank when the key has been turned OFF it is probably a welded contact on the starter solenoid/relay. It WILL happen again so replace it.
