Can anyone out there tell me what the differences are between a truck C4 and a passenger car C4? I have recently aquired a nice shift kitted C4 from a truck but I don't know if it will fit.

Does the dipstick go into the case or into the pan?

Internally, there are no differences. In a truck the large bellhousing is commonly used. That means bigger ring gear (164 tooth) different block plate (starter is relocated), bigger converter, and less room in the front of the trans tunnel. It may also have a short tail housing with a bolt-on yoke and a wierd mount on top of the tail housing.
You can swap the small bell housing on using the longer pump bolts from your other C4 and then use your converter and current flex plate.

K so I did a little more research, and I don't think it is a truck tranny, the tag under the passenger side servo bolt reads... PEM D1 J26B OSP CD .The dipstick goes into the case, but it is loose in the case and has no dipstick.
It has a weird 4 prong pigtail wire harness attached to the shift shaft. Large bell housing.
It looks to have had some work done to it, but when I pulled the pan, it had a fair amount of blackish grit. Not the typical fine gray powder you usually find, but more of an instant coffee kinda consistancy. Any ideas?

I would imagine that it is a 71. And the wires are probably the reverse lights and the lockout.:)

I've been trying to decode the tranny tag, but it doesn't seem to check out with the info I can find on the net. http://www.mustangcentral.net/tech/c4.html. it reads as follows.
    PEM D1 J26B
    E0SP CD
According to the id chart in the preceding link, it doesn't really make any sense. I think 71 is a good guess, but judging by the electrical switch and square 4 prong plug for the reverse lights etc. could it be an 81? Jimmy2gates (who I got the tranny from) thought that it was newer than 71.... any guesses?

I just noticed that the output shaft has about an 1/8" of play. Not in and out movement, just side movement. I can't remember for the life of me if that is normal.... please bare with me, it's been a LONG time since I took my mechanics course and the cobwebs in my head are all in the "transmission" section ..lol

I think your "E0xxx" part number says 1980.
The "D1" is surely for something else not related to date. Just a coincidence.

I just pulled a Ford tranny full of the coffee grains you describe. It was the clutch plates disintegrated.:(

I would be more concerned with the grit than a little play in the tail shaft. I believe that is fairly normal.

Stick with Paul in this. He is the resident C4 expert.

    E0 and a large bell tells me it's probably a C-5.

I don't know much about it, but chatting with Paul I have picked up that "C5" is a very good thing.
    Just a stout C4 basically.

PEM??? this build code is not in my automotive list. PEJ for Bobcat Pinto 4 cyl and PEN for 250 and 8 cyl full size to 351" engine.
    Built October of 1971 (D1 J)
Without the drive line yoke it should have some slop - it is 15" to the bushing so 1/4" is pretty good - I always replace them anyway.
