I have a 1970 Mav with 200 and 3 on the tree. I would like to convert to disc front brakes, 8 or 9 in rear, and 351W. Want to upgrade the manual tranny, too. You know, typical go fast with factory Ford stuff. I'm willing to look at the 331/347 stroker route, too. , But, I'm trying to do this on the low end. What donor car should I look for? Late model Mav/Comet would probably give me most except the 351W. What do YOU say? Thank you!
Later Maverick or Grenada for the disc brake stuff. There's lots of info on the search section. I'd say 9" if you are going to beef it up a bit. 331/347 stroker if you don't want to do any fabrication. A 351w will fit but it's a bear to change spark plugs unless you cut the shick towers.
first of all I have to say that is a very nice car. You can use disc brakes off a later maverick or grenada. They will bolt on. The only thing I had to change was the rubber lines. You can use an 8 inch out of a 72 or up maverick be sure to get a 5 lug one. A 57-59 ford 9 inch car rearend is also the same width but harder to find. I would try and find a wrecked 5.0 5spd mustang to get the engine and tranny out of. This engine will bolt in easily. A 351w will go in but you need to cut the shock towers if you want to change plugs. I would definately go with a 5.0 over a 351w
Yep, in fact I haven't taken my own photos yet. I bought it last November and been driving it since. Great car. Thanks for the input. Keep 'em coming.
Didn't the Grenada come with a 351W special ordered? That would be a hard but nice find for a swap car. I don't am no expert but I don't see the need for a 9" in a light Maverick unless you are going to have it on the track with slicks and a lot of HP. I may be wrong but I always heard the 8" was a pretty tough baby sister to the 9". Pretty much the same design with the low pinion gear as the 9" meshing with more teeth? I have had a 351W in my F100 and it was a great engine. Cheaper way to get the cubic inches that a stroked 302 so long as the shock towers don't bother you. Mine was the higher compression C9 block and heads though so that might have made a difference. Good luck with it and it is a very nice looking car. clint
