Hi, you may want to go ahead and pull the sending unit..it will be ...rusty and crusty...clean it up and be ready to put into the new tank... i am thinking there will be no ...gas... in the tank being there is a leak (hole) in the tank. ...:Handshake...
Good Idea Thats a good idea. I hadn't thought that far ahead .I also may have to start making a gasket for it, my ford dealer didn't seem much help at ordering the new seals I will have my fingers crossed that the old ones are OK but ya never know they may be to old and cracked to use, I wonder if there are any new silicon sealants that might work also
1st..ford dealers...have about 2 percent of our parts... 2nd...98 percent will come from here/e bay... the gasket is a ...rubber ring (on the sender). if you are carefull it will be ok. when pulling the tank...the first thing i do is... pull the ...filler neck...the ...cork gasket (between the tail panal and filler neck) ...there will most likely tear up. the ...rubber ring...in the top of the tank is a little hard to get the filler neck out of.(put a little oil down around the neck and twist.) ...and you haven't even gotten to ...removing the tank yet... You Can Do It !!! ...and we will help... Frank
Thanks for the tips on puling the tank I just finished and oiling the filer neck rubber ring helped all looks good except the tank Its a tottal loss hand fuls of gunk now I need to get the sending units all cleaned up . But first the Distributor should come out . If I have this figured right. I should turn the crank intill the mark is on Top dead center and make sure the Rotor is aligned with the mark on the distributor ring BEFORE taking it out, and put the new one back in with the Rotor in the same spot . Will I need to take the spark plugs out to turn it over by hand. What do you think .?????? yes ,no
kinda-sorta...i take #1 plug out...turn motor untill piston is up (compression stroke). then pull the dist. cap and mark (w/felt marker) the location of the rotor button pointer. make this mark on something that isn't coming out with the dist. (clean spot on the block) when you pull the dist. it will turn.so when you replace it you will have to start it in a little off the mark. then it will turn itself to the mark. the oil pump shaft is at the bottom of the hole. be carefull not to turn the motor when dist. is out. ...:Handshake...
have you dropped the tank yet... if not you might want to spray some PB blaster or WD40 on the hanger bolts and let it sit. ......
Tanks is out The tank is out nd this morning I am gona clean the sender it has a lot of crap on it . The tips on pulling the distributor are good one I woulda never thought to mark the block or figure that the oil pump is involved I will be care ull not to move it when out . Yesterday it rained during the whole time I worked on it but I had fun any way Its soooooo nice to have a car that you can work on compared to the new ones I found that a good piece of card board was my best friend for laying underneath it . I also had to remove the Brake line from the front pooporsoning valve all the way back to the axleand am getting some made they were rusted out DO YOU THINK I SHOULD REPLACE THE RUBBER ONES TOO AT THE SAME TIME . the brake lining and drums are in perfect shape 90 % lining on the shoes and real smooth surface inside the drums I think they must have been replace just before it was parked . 1993 was the last time the car was drove it has been inside a garage sense then . actually it was always garaged I feel lucky the upholstery is in perfect shape . That stuff would have been harder to get fixed then the mechanical stuff.
You Go Girl!!! cardboard...JUNKYARD CREEPER the rubber lines are pretty tough...bend them and see if they are cracked...if so replace. also...if you don't have i would suggest a set of...line wrenches . tip of the day. ......
Yes Line wrenches would have been good .I ended up useing my vise grips . I just got back from VIP auto with a new set of Tires and got a fifty dollar gift card it was some kinda promo for the month of January.one gift card for each set of tires . The tires that were on it were still Bias Ply Bought back in 1978 and the side walls were cracked . I think I will go back tomorrow and get a couple line wrenches with the card and the new brake line's and fittings they rent out the flaring tool . and sell all the parts for it so I might as well get it done . Thanks for all the support .
brake line flaring is not one of my like to do things. my friend Harold likes to show me how, so i watch and am very thankful... ...:Handshake...
What do you do with your old tank? The people I talked to wanted it to repair mine and sell it down the road. I guess one mans garbage is somone elses tressure.
