Finally took some pics of the Maverick I got for FREE. My co-worker is PCSing to Kadena, Japan and was gonna junk it so I opted to take it off his hands, lol. It originally came with an I6 but I received it with a 302 on the hoist (got the hoist free too). I'm not sure what the engine came out of but it has Holley 600 carb and an Edelbrock intake. What's in the the pics is what I have so I know need quite a few more parts just to get it in driving condition (torque converter, alternator, starter, radiator, etc.) Link to Pics: http://photobucket.com/napalms_maverick
That motor looks like it is out of a Fox-body Mustang. There should be a casting number on the block by the passenger side oil pan rail. It might read "E7..." in which case, E stands for 1980s and 7 would be the specific year. Looks like an excellent free car. Most cars you get for free are good for parts.
Cool, mavgrab302. So I looked up how to decode the Casting #'s and it appears I have a 1987 Truck Engine. With it being a truck engine, will this complicate things? What should I look out for? Is it even possible? lol Thanks!
I really don't think the truck engines were any different than any other 302 from the 80's, The hp rating might be lower, just right down the info you have and put it in the car so when you are ordering parts you can tell them look up 87 f150 instead of 77 maverick. I'm sure someone will chime in if I'm wrong on anything. There's a bunch of great people on this sight.....
The casting number signifies the first vehicle that part was engineered for and first used in. Then in traditions that date back to Henry Ford I, they use them in other cars in the line-up, too. example ... early Mustangs have some parts with Falcon codes. The motor I am using is a 1974 351W and it came from the factory with 1970 heads. So ... I am wondering if this means that motor still has a flat tappet cam? (I doubt it ...) The Mustang GT had gone to roller lifters at that point. I don't know much about mid-80s truck motors ... but I don't know what else would be different about the block.
Hm, good information. Anyone know if the bellhousing I have will bolt right up? What are the major differences in a 6 vs an V8 bellhousing? Also, where can I get a starter dust-cover-ma-jig thing that bumps up against the bellhousing?
Depends on which 6 your car had. If it had a 200, the bell will not work. 250 will work. The 5th character in the VIN will tell what engine it was. T=200, L=250. Looks like a 250 from what I can see in the pics.
