You will probably need to use your bellhousing. Otherwise open it up and at least change the gaskets...

Be careful it is not a Cruise-a-matic ...
don't know when they started using C4s,
but my 65 Mustang had the older tranny and it was awful ...
    C4 is much better.

The C4 from 1967 uses the small (24 x 24 spline) input shaft which is weaker than the shaft that came in your 72. It also uses a "screw-in" modulator while the 72 uses a "push-in" modulator. The 67 C4 is not a dual range like the 64 - 66 so it will have the same shift pattern that you have now.
Even with those differences it should be fine (if it is in good condition) for use behind your six. You will not be able to use your converter - may have to buy one for a 67 - probably for a 289.

    The 64-66 C4 was a "dual range" transmission. It was referred to a s a cruise-o-matic.
The "select shift" C4 was from 67 on. The difference is that there was no way to manually shift the early transmission. You had drive one (which started in low and shifted 1,2,3) and you had drive two which started in second and shifted to third. You did have a low but as soon as you shift out of low it would make the rest of the shifts automatically.

Yup ... acted pretty weird at times if you tried to manually shift it ... frequently there was a huge gap of "nothing" between first and second ...not slipping or in neutral ... just a couple of seconds where the motor still had a load on it but it did not seem to be in a particular gear.

Had it checked at a tranny shop and they told me it must have just been rebuilt before I got the car, and it was in "great shape".

    Like I said ... awful.
