Hey all, I don't have a commet or Maverick but it is a Ford. 1973 Pinto. 2.3 liter turbo with NOS. C4 Automatic stock. Runs 12.5 1/4mile at 108mph. 2nd to last pass had some slipping 2nd to 3rd backed off the gas a little and it shifted and all was ok. Last pass major slip from 2nd to 3rd rpm all over the place and then oil started shooting out the dipstick tube. Messy. I don't expect the Trans to last forever but I'm wondering if anyone thinks I could just adjust the band and be OK for awhile or if it's done? I know nothing about auto transmissions. It has newer clean unburnt oil in it and who knows how many miles. Also, because of the turbo and positive pressure I never hooked up the vacuum Mod. It shifted fine via RPM and nice and firm shifts even without shiftkit. Was that a mistake? Thanks for any help in advance.
I like that car. A REAL sleeper. But if I were you, driving a 12 second car on a 40 yr old transmission? Get it rebuilt before you blow it. That is why I don't drive my car. New engine with stock 40 yr old tranny, and I am afraid to drive on it until I get the trans rebuilt.
Most likely its hurt if it slipped... And the cause is most likely the servo seals or direct clutch. I'd just freshen it up and put a good shift kit in it or valvebody. Nice ride too by the way.
I'd get it freshened up. Even if you can adjust the bands. It's only going to be a matter of time. I don't ever know when a good time is, bit I always seem to find out at a bad time.
Thanks for all the comments! I will look up PaulS. I'm figuring I'd have to buy a beefed up trany, just would like to make a few more races until I get it. Someone told me to look at the trannies from redneck performance on ebay.
