When I press my brake the left turn signal indicator lights up and the left turn signal itself lights up. Any idea how this could have happened?

Max; go under the dash and look at the plug where the main harness plugs in. Look for a pulled pin or chaffed wire. Also, inspect for bad grounds.

Did you replace the headlight switch with the correct one, or the free one from that van that "looks the same on the outside"?

This is almost certainly a ground problem. Check the left tail light socket inside the trunk. The tail light/brake light bulb grounds itself through the outside of the socket, and many times if you wiggle it around real good it will make a better ground. A better idea might be to remove the socket and hit that area a little with some sandpaper or a wire brush...

One of the bulbs, probably tail light could be in backwards. Yes, if you work hard enuff at it you can actually force a dual element bulb in the wrong slots and it can do exactly like you state. Just something I saw happen to a dude once. Retained it for some reason.

i had a simalir problem in my first car....a 1965 falcon station wagon!! :D

turned out it was the steering column was coming apart and the turn signal cam apperatus in the column was being spread apart and the contacts were grounding out on the column cause it to do weird things just like that. until i lost all lights all together on back i never could figure out what it was until i traced the dead wires. dont know if this will help you or not.......good luck

My left turn sigal light in the speedometer used to come on when I turned on the lights, not real bright but you could see it, It turned out to be the left front turn signal under the bumper was loose, the whole housing, tighten the 2 bolts and mine started working right:bananaman
