I have an older 302 with a 2bbl carb and 2bbl manifold. I have a new 4bbl edelbrock that I want to install without changing the intake for now. Isn't there some sort of a carb adapter I can use to do this? I wanted to get something from Kragen and looked online, this is what I found, would it work? http://shop.oreillyauto.com/ProductDetail.aspx?MfrCode=MRG&MfrPartNumber=1929&CategoryCode=3575Y
It might Mo, but it's not a good idea. I had a buddy of mine do that in high school and something went terribly wrong. He ended up catching his carb on fire. It wasn't pretty and we called him 'flash' for the rest of his high school days.
why? Just do the swap. I am going to. Picked up a weiand intake and I am going to swap out my 2 bbl. and put in the 4bbl. All you need is about 4 hours free time, and all the parts, it is an easy swap. Just takes time. It isn't too technical. YOU CAN DO IT!!
trying to put 4bbls worth of air flow threw 2 wholes just doesnt work. between the path below the carb going from 4 to 2 holes is a restriction and the large volume of 4 bbls trying to suck through 2 holes, you will probly loose power.
They have the adapter to do that. The link you give redirects to a default page, so I couldn't see it. But it is surely the adapter that I am thinking of. I have used it before, and it doesn't work right. Like mentioned, the air flow of the 4v won't match up to the restriction of the 2v intake inlet, so tuning is a biotch, and power is not improved. Mileage also suffered along with the fouled spark plugs. Just get the carb, clean/refresh it as needed, then set it on a shelf (dry of fuel and wrapped) until you have all your parts and gaskets lined up on the shelf along side of it. Then do it all at once. Don't piecemeal it. You'll be sorry.
The adaptor I think was actually made to go from a 2 bbl carb to a 4 bbl manifold for economy reasons. It just will work backwards too. But like was said before, although it will work there won't be any gains and could be a puddling problem with the fuel. I wouldn't do it Mo, just wait until you have the correct manifold. I know, I would be tempted myself.
Yep. I believe that nowadays the part is advertised as ONLY a 2v carb to 4v intake plate. But in years past, back when I did it 20+ years ago, it was advertised as either.
The part I come up with in the link is for putting a 2 bbl on a 4 bbl intake, not a 4bbl to a 2bbl intake.
If you bolt the plate to a 2v intake with short allen head bolts, it does work in reverse. I remember long ago it was adversted to work both ways. Now it isn't listed that way, probably because it is a really bad idea. Must have been some sort of liability to the manufacturer... ???
I've run across several of these adapters. Of about a half dozen, only one was used to bolt a 2 bbl carb on a 4 bbl intake. I have two taking up space in my shop for a future project (2-2 bbl Holleys on an Edelbrock Airgap 2x4 intake)
4 bbl swap I was going to do the same thing. The cost of the adapter here from Auto Zone was about $35. I got to looking at the whole thing and told myself no. I went back and got the Weiland intake from edelbrock to put my 600 cfm 4 bbl on to it. the only thing different is the tightening or torque pattern. it is different and please use the new pattern on the 2bbl manifold as well as the 4bbl manifold. I tried to use the old way of torque settings and it kept leaking water into the oil. The new way is so much better. I finally got to run mine the other day and hold on to your sox. Zip gone. It runs great. Very quick response as well as pickup.
