I have an 1986 302 in my maverick that has a factory roller cam. I have a points distributor out of a 73 302 in it. I put this distributor in it while the motor was still in the lincoln and it seemed to run ok, I could run it long because the electric fuel pump wouldn't work. I am wondering if this distributor will work or am I going to screw something up. Thanks for any help

the gear on it will get eaten up by the cam. you need to change the distrubtor gear to a gear that is compatiable with the cam.

You can just change the gear on the Distributor but you need to make sure the old gear did not get torn apart and throw metal all over the inside of your engine. There are specs somewhere online about how high up on the shaft the gear needs to be. I am not certain that there was not changes on that. You can just replace the gear by punching out a roll pin. That part is easy, just make sure there are no differences in the block heights between the 2 engines. There is ot much of any difference I just cannot remember and I might be thinking 460 stuff since that is what I have worked on last.

There were no stock steel geared points distributors. If you want a steel gear buy one from Ford racing. The instructions are included as to how the do the swap. Once you have pressed the gear into the postion it needs to be (the measurements needed are in the instructions) you'll need to drill a new hole for the roll pin. This is done at a 90* angle to the old hole. The new hole is drilled thru both the gear and shaft. It sounds intimidating, but it's not. I've done two. You need to also ditch the points as well at the same time and replace em with an electronic module.

thanks for the help. The reason that I am running points is that me and my dad know nothing about electronic ignition and we do know about points. I would like to run duraspark but don't know how to wire it up. Do you know anything about the hei distributors for sbf's. I have seen them for about $80 on ebay.

Just get a Pertronix module to replace the points, there's a guy on ebay that sells them for about $60. Only two wires to connect.

Yea, the one thing I know about those HEI's is this: THEY'RE FRIGGIN HUGE AND WILL BLOCK YOUR VIEW OF THE CARBURETOR. You'll need a smaller aircleaner assembly to make room for the HEI's cap. Butt-ugly POS if you ask me.

I read on another forum about some guys running those made-in-China HEI distributors, a couple of them just fell apart while running.
