I'm still a little confused as to how to pick the correct flexplate. I have a stock 71 maverick with a C4 and it had a 200ci. I changed it over to a 302. Now I'm having my rotating assembly balanced on a 331 I'm building and wanted to know which flexplate to buy to give to the machinist along with my stroker crank and balancer.
what balance is the crank. if you dont know the balance the crank is then then i would come up with a used balancer and fly wheel from one or both balance types and take them with you. the machinest should be able to figure it out. it may cost you extra because of his time involved but thats the cost of not knowing. if you have a 50oz crank then you need a aftermarket flex plate for the 50oz balance and a c4 bolt pattern. you should have the small bell housing so you would get the one with the smaller tooth count.
so I just got back from there. the dude said that the crank was already balanced (they charged me $170 labor) when I purchased it which I remember. so he said all I need to do is buy a 28oz balanced flexplate and the damper and I don't need to balance them all together. But I read that I need to do that so I'm confused.
If it was balanced at 28 oz then you need the 28 oz balance flexplate, The bell housing will determine if you need the 157 or164 tooth count flexplate. If its the stock maverick trans it will be the 157 tooth. The balancer can just be ordered for any Maverick with a 302. You can just bolt it on and go as i have used stuff from chp. It will be close to being balanced, Probably wont be perfect but depending on whose doing the balancing it may not be perfect anyway. Use the money that they would charge for the balance job and get a good quailty flexplate and balancer, Especially the balancer.
if you're running the C4, just get on ebay (or somwhere) and buy a 157 tooth 28oz balance flywheel. it's around $50
