Pushrods, maybe..but you should double check the length once you have the heads installed, your 72 heads won't have pedestal bolts. If your going to have a valve job done, once your done your porting, check and see what they would charge to machine the heads and install rocker arm studs, then youuo can use roller rockers. But it was either Comp or Crane, that was making a pedestal roller conversion kit..$$$ and if your spending that much, just save your money and buy some aluminium heads..
Roller Rockers, just curious You guys are being very patient with what I don't know. Appreciate it. This is a low budget operation aimed at a driver. I'm HOPING the heads will be in good condition and I can bolt them on as is. If machine shop work is required I'll have it done but I hope I don't need it. I think its very expensive around here. As I mentioned before, I'll get new springs and of course, seals. Thanks for letting me know I need rockers, bolts, maybe pushrods. Anything else? Where is a good place to buy these parts if I have to get new? If they're not too expensive I will get new. But, now you have my curiosity up. I assume "roller rockers" use roller bearings and are not related to roller cams, right? Not that I'll have either. Thanks. Jim
Roller rockers have a roller tip that contatcs the valve stem, better ones have roller fulcrums as well.
As far as putting screw in rocker studs on pedestal type heads is concerned... it can be done but:The pedestal pads are set up for 5/16ths bolts to hold the rockers down, hence there isnt much meat to drill/tap and mill em to accept rocker studs/guide plates. It can be done successfully but...there really isnt a whole lot of meat on em for the process.Especially if you want to go 7/16ths studs(its a no no) 3/8ths is about the best you can do on em.Good luck!!!
ive bought used roller rockers for pedestal heads for $100 bucks in the past. i actually have a roller motor siting in the garage with roller rockers on it. i would be willing to sell them for $100.00. caution, they are adjusted by shiming and the prossess is a little tricky. crane cams has instructions for this some where on there website. i sugest go find them and edcuate your self a little bit more before you make any decisions. oh any the stock stamped ones will easly support your 200hp goal.
This is the only thing I could find on the Crane site for shimming rocker arms but its not specific to roller rocker arms. http://cranecams.com/pdf/252g.pdf I'll try to find some good used stock rockers, bolts, etc. eBay has a set listed now with BIN for $25 plus $15 shipping. Looks like everything I'd need but push rods and they're not expensive to buy new. Do you have the whole set of rockers, bolts, pushrods, etc? If yes, how much for the whole shootin' match? If cost of the stock stuff gets close to the roller rocker set up I'd go for rollers. Why not?? I expect I could manage to shim the rollers. I'm trainable.
i have the rockers, bolts, and pedestals. the push rods i have are for roller lifters. (shorter) your stock ones should work. those instructions are the correct ones. i dont know what if any shims are with these rockers as they came already installed on this motor.
Bryant, let me see if the guy I'm getting the heads from still has those parts or if I can find something locally. If none of that works I'll get back with you on the roller rockers. Thanks for your help. Jim
72 heads have pressed in studs for the rockers. If you're going to buy rockers forthe E7's, go with Crane's energizer 1.7's. You'll pickup an extra 10-15 hp from these alone. Not sure, but I think your pushrods are the correct length.
i have a set of stock rockers and bolts you can have if you pay for the trip by the man in brown let me know and i can pack and ship them out to you monday brad
Thanks very much, Brad. Can I have a rain check? I may not need them. Guy I'm getting the heads from says he'll throw the rockers, bolts, etc. in if he can find them. Should know next week some time. You guys are great. I'll have to look for a way to pay it forward. Jim
reviving this thread. I have '74 302 with speedpro flat tops in it. D3UE heads and I think the heads are causing me grief (potential cracks). using the comp XE-262 cam going directly to a set of E7 heads w/ matching pushrods etc will I have any issues? also I have read that you can use 460 rockers for the 1.73 ratio? is this possible and what clearance issues could I have?
Stefan has been PMed to tell him that my posts in this tread have been hacked to add links. I've replaced the engine twice since this thread was current. I'd be happy to see it go away. Maybe you could start a new thread for your questions. Jim
You can go to E7 heads directly. But I'd first mill em .040 to get the chambers closer to the D3 heads volume. 460 rockers don't fit small block heads. Better off with 1.7 full roller pesdestal rockers for this. I don't recall if your pushrods will need to be changed or not, the E7 pushrods (for Mustangs) definately won't work here, you'd need to use pushrods for an 87-91 truck.
thanks for the insight. I am not real worried about compression ratio as I have the flat top pistons in there and it already has trouble running on premium gas so a slight drop will be ok for me. also I do have the push rods that match the E7 heads (was from a late 86 truck). So I should be able to clean them up put new stem seals in and run them as is. will the E7TE's be considerably better flow than the stock D3UE (74 heads)?
