I need some help getting clarification on a set of headers I have that I am trying to sell. I have a set of Tubular Automotive headers with 1 1/2" OD pipes for a 351W in a Maverick. I was told that these would just bolt in with no mods needed to the shock towers and that you used your stock frame and motor mounts and they would bolt in with out any modifications. The only requirement is the drop down bracket for the power steering set up. I bought these to use in my car used off ebay and have since then bought a set of the Crite headers, so I have never even installed these. I do not want to mislead anyone by givng them incorrect infomation and would truly like to tell them if this is so or if they have to make changes. Even if I end up not selling them because they require to much modifications for the individual interested in them. Any help of information that anybody could give me on these headers would be helpful and greatly appreciated. I tried going to their site and they do not have much techincal or support info available. I guess worst case I could try to give them a call and see what they say, but I was hoping some one here on the board had first hand experience with these headers. Thanks for any info in advance. Allen Small
Allen, Those are small tube headers but I might be interested in trying them - I am in seattle, WA., how much do you want for them? Do you know what shipping would cost?
The W headers don't require different mounts like some of their headers. They also do not require shaving the towers, but I would certainly recommend it, having seen plenty of 351 swaps and knowing how big a difference shaving makes. I am surprised you found a site for Tubular. They must be actually trying to join us in the 21st century finally. As of 2008, you still only had phone contact with them. I would also like to mention that I have personally owned 3 sets of their headers, and they were a really good product. No complaints. That said, I haven't seen your set and didn't own any 351w set myself. I would love to have a set on hand, but the 1.5" tubes kills it for me. Someone will be building a 351w mild enough to use them soon enough. Either that or someone will need a set of headers for their swap, but not be able to afford the $400-600 price for new headers. Good luck Dave
Ratio411, The Tubular Automotive web site it was basically just a page that indicated they do custom exhaust with their address, phone numbers and a few pictures of some custom headers they had made for some cars, mostly exotic type race cars, nothing like our Mavericks and no way of doing any kind of search for info. But it is a start a I guess. I bought these off ebay a few years back to use on my car, but since then have bought a set of the Crite headers. I had indicated in a few "Parts Wanted" post where some other guys where looking for these to buy that I had these for sell. A couple passed cause the tubes where to small for them. I had two other individuals from the forum ask me if they fit with out modifications and I could not honestly tell him the correct answer. I did not think that they did but if I am not certain I do not want to mislead anybody. As I had said even if it causes me not to be able to sell them. I will not mis-represent anything just for a sell. PaulS, I was looking to get $175.00 plus shipping for them, there are no collector with them or bolts, which is not a biggy. They are in excellent shape, no dings or dimbled in areas or any rusted areas. They would just need a good sanding for repainting. When I had checked FED EX for shipping it was at around $115.00 to ship to California, but I feel there is a cheaper was to ship. I had check to see using the package that they came in which was sort of large and over kill. I was going to make another package and check to see if that helped in the shipping cost. There are two other people interested in these but not sure how serious they are though. I will keep you posted and let you know if they both pass. Thanks to both of you for your reponses and interest. Thanks Allen Small
Allen, At $290 dollars with shipping I will pass - I can get a set for $159 shipped to my door. Yours are probably better headers but it is a gamble if they would fit my application (66 Mustang 351W).
i just put Tubular Automotive headers in my comet they fit with no mods but it's really tight! and a pain in my rear next time i have to change plugs.im going to kill myself latter
WOW, that is alot for shipping. i can ship two (2) complete bucket seats from Ky to Cali for right under $100. sounds like they're trying to rip you a new one
Those headers he is selling are listed in Tubular's catalog to fit 65-66 Stangs with 351w swap, as well as 70-77 Maverick/Comet. So it's not really a big gamble. Also, they sell for about $450 new, before shipping. Just something to think about.
Here's the notes from the catalog. They say the headers even fit manual tranny except in Maverick/Comet. Also fits power steering with a drop bracket, like most other headers. Look at ES9...
my headers came with these same instructions but i didn't have to do any cutting or denting, nor did i have to remove the idler arm. i will need the power steering drop down for the cylinder though.
Guys, I appreciate your responses and the installation directions. These should help who ever ends up buying them and I am sure they would appreciate what you guys have posted also. I have done more research and found that it is the overall size of the package that is driving the shipping cost up. For the $115.00 cost it indicates that price was based on dimensional size of the package and not the weight. The size at that time was 12" x 42" x 40" with weight of 40 lbs. I repackaged them to a smaller box and got them down to $75.00. I have now figured out that if I nest them I can even get the box smaller which should drop the cost some more. Again thanks for your responses. Allen Small
The idea of the bigger box is to keep the product from being damaged. I guess the best thing a seller can do is 'pow-wow' with the buyer and ask straight up: Do you want to pay 115 for shipping in a big, safe box, or do you want to pay 75 and take your chances on the headers arriving in perfect condition?
