Is there an easy way to get at the starter switch to test/replace it? My 77 302 C4 starts when the starter is cranking, but dies the instant I turn the key to the "run" position. My autozone guy says the switch is bad.

Is that the switch on top of the steering column? If it is, the engineers should be shot! Any shortcuts or great ideas?

The ignition swich is located on the top of the steering column about half way down. It is connected to the ignition (where the key goes) by a small rod. You have to drop the column by removing the bolts under the column. Just the the bolt up near the top of the coulmn. You don't even have to mess with the fire wall end of the column. I replace the one in my 4 door a few months ago and it only took about a hour to get it a part and back together. Its not hard at all. GO for it. Russ

    Switch

    Thanks Russ!

Does a new starter switch come with the wires & plug attached, or do I have to solder?

I'm also installing a B&M floor shifter, and I don't have a wiring diagram for the car. Where do I tap into the neutral/park wiring? What wires am I to tap (colors?)? Might as well do it all at once.

On another Thread I've seen a refernce to a company that sells Maverick manuals with wiring diagrams. I feel lost without one. Any guess what that company was, or their link on the web? I can't find the Thread.

Thanks again, Russ. I went for it, got the column apart, column shifter removed, and floor shifter installed & working. Looks great, and just need to wire it up. New switch Monday night.

Next up is the new Edelbrock carb & manifold, and the Hooker Headers. I've spent $775 so far, and I feel like a kid again. It's worth it!

    P. S. This will be a lot more fun when I cover this damn gravel driveway! Bummer!

    Park Neutral wires?

Can anyone give me an idea where to tap the neutral/park wires for my new B&M shifter? I ordered a wiring diagram, but that will take two weeks from AutoKrafters.

    Thanks!

at the base of the steering column is a semicircular switch which is reverse (on my 75mav). there are 4 red or brown wires associated with it. i cut them and then tested to find which ran reverse lights and power for neutral switch on my B&M pro ratchet. you are still working off the neutral switch up the column, but as long as you dont move the column shifter and set up the neutral on the b&m, everything will work. some other years may have the neutral/rev switch on the side of the c-4. you should still splice the B&M into this circuit after the stock neutral switch to keep from being able to start in any gear. just go slowly and remember that the new switch should be last in the circuit.

    Thank you both!

My neutral switch is on the column, not on the tranny. I figured it out as soon as I found it. The wiring diagram is a blessing.

On to the carb and manifold this week, and new 3.55 gears for the rear-end after that.

This is a great site, and you folks are the best!
