I have a 302 that's pretty stock with a 2 barrel carb with elect choke. I have an edelbrock performer intake and I wanna upgrade to a better carb. I have new aluminum heads that I bought and just waiting to install those. I have had a 200 ci with a one barrel for a long time. The car will always be a daily driver but of course I'm trying to make it a little fast and take it to the track here and there. I want to get a carb that I can work on and learn on. Any recommendations? Also, where should I purchase my carb?
a 600 cfm car is a good place to start. i would recomend geting some books first. there are a few books on holeys and one or two books on edelbrocks/carter carbs. there are all kinds of opinions on both makes of carbs. people love and hate both types for different reasons. im a holey person, but if your somebody that just wants to bolt on a carb and forget about, i feel the edelbrock is a little bit beter for that. what i would sugest is to buy a used carb for around 50 bucks (i have a holey model 1850 that needs a rebuild that i would sell) get a rebuild kit and a book on what ever carb you get and rebuild it. this way you learn how a carb works and what all is going on inside it. all carbs should need tuning after installation. every motor is different and there is no way a carb can be tuned for a motor with out it being ran on that motor.
Here is the one i would use. http://store.summitracing.com/egnse...902704+1051506942+115+4294900253&autoview=sku
that is a really good carb for performance. being here in socal you can get away with not having a choke like that doesnt have. if you want just the most power you can get then that carb is great to use. its not the best for cold weather starting, or just cruising. its alittle pricey to start out with but with going to alum. heads its along the lines of performance that the heads are. the performer intake will be the horse power limiting factor along with the cam.
A 600 cfm Holley with vacuum secondaries and an electric choke is a good all around carb. Summitt is a good place or Jegs to purchase. Dan
the first one suggested is a little pricey. But I was looking at some of the ones on summit at 600cfm and there were a few. I have already got a holly book that I'm gonna start reading, thanks for the suggestion. So any of the holly's on summit with the vacuum secondary, electric choke and 600cfm would be a decent choice right?
ford uses a special lever on the carb that works a rod that goes to the kickdown lever on the transmission. make sure that the carb you order has this ford kickdown lever. there are kits to convert some carbs to have this lever.
Holley Headache I guess being in Socal the weather doesn't change much but in my experience with Holley carbs you have to play around with it every time the temp changes more than 10 degrees. I would go with the Edelbrock because the set up is easier to maintain. It's more plug and play than the Holley.
Edelbrock! Holleys are good carbs but too many adjustments for a newb to be user friendly. Edelbrocks are teh best bolt on and go carbs. Plus they dont seem to be as fickle with weather changes.
......Maybe I should stay out of this one I always get caught in the whole Holley, Edelbrock(Carter) discussion..........
I've used both the Edelbrock and Holley. The Edelbrock was better on the street with less adjusting for changing conditions. The Holley is great for performance, lots of parts and lots of people out there that can help you work on it. Right out of the box for street car, Edelbrock. Strip performance, can't go wrong with the proven Holley. JMO.
could anyone suggest any models of either one off the summit website? I love these eddelbrock and holley wars.
