I had a column shifter in my 71 F100. I know it's not a Maverick but if it'll work in an F100 I see no reason for it not to work in a Maverick'
I did have to play with it a while to get the throw right to hit all gears. It was a pain to get it to where it would put the tranny into 1st but after adjusting the arm length on the shifter it worked fine

sounds like you getting some good info here. But have you considered the flip side, seems like some people suggested that the AOD might not be a very strong transmission. Just something to think about, I'm sure others have more experience and can tell you more.

The AOD had its problem years, just like the C4 did in the beginning, but unless you are trying to do the quarter mile the AOD will work just as good if not better in most street situations. One of the biggest advantages is you can go with a lower gear ratio and end up getting better fuel economy. The gear ratio of the AOD is 1st- 2.40 2nd- 1.47 3rd- 1.00 4th- 0.67 the gear ratio for an C4 is 1st- 2.46 2nd- 1.46 3rd- 1.00 the first three gears are close enough together that it you wont be able to tell the difference between the two. So if you like to spin your tires with 3.80's or 4.11's and still be able to drive it on the freeway with decent RPM's that is a good way to go.
As long as the transmission is set up right then it can last quite a while.
Ask 71gold just how long his original truck 1984 AOD lasted(http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=25929), and from what I have seen he was not very nice too it. Here is the original write up on it http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=26116&highlight=AOD+71gold. And use an Lokar TV cable, make sure you get it tensioned right because that is the leading cause of failure on these transmissions (and Ironically the GM 700r4)

the AODs are mostly used in street cars...overdrive...you don't use overdrive in a drag car.
my AOD has a transbrake :yup:

    Hello Sierra:
I have an AOD in my 71 Maverick Grabber behind a 331 stroker w a carb. for three years now and its working great. I'm presently installing a "Lentech" Overdrive tranny behind a World Products 427 FI in a COMET and I'll have a lot more pictures and information on this one. We made our own transmission mounts and several other parts which were necessary to make the swap. I'll be sure to send you some information when I get "this" car done by this June for the 2009 Hot Rod POWER TOUR.. I mounted an illuminated electric "switch" on my console in both cases for the overdrive
and just "click" it when I want to cruise. Otherwise , it will stay in regular operation like a C4 setup. If you're on the highway and want to play , just hit the switch and you're in third , or second if you shift.. lotsa grins.. I'll be in touch when I gather more information . Chip CAMEO

I have an AOD out of a 1993 Ford E150 van, used Franks tranny cross member, a new tranny mount and flywheel (from NPD) a dipstick from a 93 Mustang GT, and a Lokar cable kit, cut 1 1/2" out of the driveshaft. Other than that, it works with my factory column shift, no issues at all.
