No offense intended hear at all. I was rather proud of my dyno numbers for an old motor and all bolt on stuff. And the fact that our motors should be very similar in the internals that you would get a very realistic idea of where you are at with yours. But mine is going to change though. I now want MORE POWER, go figure. So heads, fresh short block, Lunati Voodoo cam, quick fuel 650 DP carb, headers and torker intake. I am sure the 'seat of my pants' horsepower will be at least twice what I am making now!! And yes, the SMILES per gallon is sure to increase! All the best! rk
I agree with the 160ish but if you bump your timing up you may get a couple more, bump it up until you get pinging going up a hill in high gear and then back down. On stock heads you may get to 12 BTDC. I added a performer intake and cam to a stock 72 motor and got 180 hp 240 ft/lb of torque on a dyno. Keep in mind mine had manual everything and no a/c. Still made a HUGE difference in seat of the pants.
Heres my 2 cents. Do what you can and do it right. Drive the hell out of it and have fun. There is always someone faster somewhere no matter how much you spend. Build the car for yourself and what you need it to do. If buddy next door smokes you with his Camaro who cares. Hes likely got 5 times the money in it. Sorry getting tired starting to babble.
i apologize i guess humor dosent go over well on the internet im only eighteen and know only the basics about cars, and i was going off of info that my fellow classmates gave so that might explain alot. i just want to beat a few ricers on friday nights thats all
My car is the same as far as the manual everything, steering, trans and no A/C, and already bumped timing to 12 degrees BTDC. I was hoping for more that 13hp from a cam change though. rk
No ripping here either! Guess in a way a good way to say this, You may feel your eyeballs in the back of your head and engine may only dyno 100 hp. The kids at school are the same as JC WHITNEY selling the gas saving crap. If you keep putting all that 10-25% stuff on,,,, your going to have to drain gas out the tank! Add all that 10 - 25 hp increase,,,, your gonna have a rocket ship!
I had hoped so too, but like everyone else is saying I really felt it in the seat of the pants. I've got the dyno sheet for the after, but only documents for the stock.
That was the main reason for putting it on the dynojet in January, knowing from whence I came. I would love to slide in a short block with all the same and rerun it with higher compression, run it on the dyno, then do the cam, run it again, then heads, etc. but that is just not economically feasible. So I will have to run it as a unit. But had I not known what I was making the curiosity would kill me. But as was said in a previous post, more is better and will make you smile. Bumper sticker on my Uncle's corvair powered rail, "RACING COSTS MONEY! HOW FAST DO YOU WANT TO GO???" rk
If you really want low buck, go find a good serviceable 302 roller long block from a 94-97 E or F series (van or truck) and swap it into your car. Leave the stock roller in it, port the exhaust sides of the heads, swap on a set of 1.7 roller rockers, your intake and carb, bump the timing to 12-14* BTDC, add headers. Even better with gears and a 4 speed transmission. You can do all this for less than a grand. and have 250-275 horses.
Hey, don't worry about numbers. If the ricers want a number, pull one out of your @ss and sound convincing. A nice intake, well tuned Holley, headers, dual exhuast, Duraspark conversion, and all new plugs/wires/filters will give your car a nice shove in the right direction. That is all that matters. You WILL feel a difference. After you get this done, and are on solid ground again with your finances, look for an improvement in gearing. That will put a huge smile on your face. Then all the mods to the engine will make sense and be greatly enhanced. Shoot for a 3.25 or 3.40 gear. 3.55 if you find a deal too good to pass up and don't do much open road driving. Before the gears, if your car came with a 3.00 stock, you got a good shot at burning the rice. Remember that they start with low horsepower and have less to work with to boot. Unless they have a turbo, all their attitude is 'manufactured' just like I suggested you do. Whoever's BS is more convincing wins. When you get a gear, you will be able to put your BS on the turbo guys. They have the turbo, but you have twice as many cylinders. Good luck and hang around!
Personally, I didn't see anything in that video that proved anything. All I saw was a buncha headlights in the dark. Coulda been a bunch of soccer moms leavin the soccer park for all I saw.
