If you overfill the C4, does it come out somewhere, and if so, where? I am talking about maybe half a quart over the fill mark...
The problem with overfilling any automatic is the fluid will get into the rotating parts and cause the fluid to foam. Foam will not cool or take away the heat as it should. 1/2 quart may or may not make a difference, Due to variations in tube length and dip stick markings. But you know to be safe what you have to do. That is part of the reason i run a deep pan with a extension on the pickup. This way you can run just under the full mark and still have extra fluid.
Over filled will push fluid out the overflow. Its at the rear of case on the tailshaft very top. most of time tranny will be warm to hot when pushing out. As Blown 5.0 said, you will foam fluid. I would drain out what you think needed an fully warmed up top it off.
Well, actually, I don't have to drain it because it is leaking out faster than i can put it in. I just sopped up about half a quart, started the car up and crawled under it, but didn't see a drip. When I filled it a little overfull, it left a nice big dollop about every 6" while driving it out of my driveway and down the street, which is why I was wondering if it was coming from the overflow. The entire pan area is wet, and I am wondering if it isn't just the cork gasket giving up the ghost. I don't see any fluid above the pan/gasket area. This is the reason I haven't driven the car since I put in the new engine. I am afraid I am spewing the fluid out and will end up running it dry if I drive any extended period of time.
Did you put a chrome pan on the trans. if so , did you scuff up the lip that the gasket touches. Chrome pans are notorious for leaking if we dont roughen up the surface for the gasket to seat on. Was just wondering.
Nope, all stock, except I did the homemade shift kit, and cut out my own cork gasket. It has always leaked from the point where the shifter hooks up, but now it is dry there, and wet all over on the bottom. With the drop every 6 inches, I thought I had blown a leak by one of the cooler hoses, but today, now that it has leaked down to "normal" levels, it isn't leaking at all when running...
Wash all the trans fluid off and drop it some motor oil dye. Then check it out with a black light after the sun goes down.
Fill the C4 with the engine running at an idle in Park. Fill it to half way between the ADD and FULL marks on the stick. Run it through the gears several times and fill it to the same point again.
some transmissions have a little hole at the top with a cover on it( i forget what it's called), i'm not sure if you can see it inside the car, or if ours even have them, but if it gets over filled, it would come out there
Make sure it isn't coming from the dipstick tube. Mine did that for a while and would run down on the pan, took me while to figure it out, but it just took an o-ring to fix.
