ok i have a 76 302 block bored .040 over with a set of E7TE heads (HO 5.0 heads).... they have 1.6 pedestal mount roller rockers and Crane conical valve springs... what are your suggestions on a cam? hydraulic? mechanical? roller? flat tappet?... And size and duration? I was thinkin about a set of solid roller lifters with maybe upwards of a .500 lift and around 280 duration let me know what would work best thanks for the help update: i just brought my t5 home... so the tranny im using is a borg-warner world class t5 if that helps Opps shouldnt have mentioned cams hahah (jeff and frank)
I used the comp cams xe-274 in a 390 as well as a 460 with similar nastiness. has just the right amount of lope at an idle and pull something rancid up to 6500rpm I am considering something similar for my 302 oh specs are Intake .562 lift @274 (advertised) Exhaust .565 @286 (advertised) I am not sure what the small block equivalent will be but I am going to investigate myself.
keep in mind u need a cam to match the rest of your engine (intake, exhaust, rpm range, etc).... also consider ur cam along with the proper stall converter for best operation and rear end gears so it doesnt fall flat on it's face.
i want to run a single plane to make more power in the mid to high rpm range... also a 3.73 is what i plan on puttin in the rear... i will get a stall converter to match the set up
match up your intake that ur wanting to your cam and converter combo and the rest should fall into place once you know for sure what rpm you wanna run then you can buy your intake and cam to match... then converter to follow
I'm sold on the hydraulic rollers myself. Of course the solid roller is much more efficient and lighter but it takes an adjustable valvetrane and cam specific valve springs.
Hey Tony, missed you this weekend. Hope you're feeling better. I'd stick with a hydraulic cam for the street. Once it's set you pretty much never have to adjust it. With a solid roller cam you're going to need to keep a watch on it and check the adjustments every so often. JMO
Yep on the roller for sure! Hydraulic for street an mech for track, just my preference. I was on the first of list of losing new cams till they found out about the oil an other issues. Lost 3 engines in certain stages due to flat tappet. Always good to get your game plan together in wants n needs, then call the cam companies, ask several ones to see the difference, talk to some others with near same build an go from there! Good Luck
this cam from crower rocks with a stock h.o. engine had one in my green mustang http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=CRO-15512&autoview=sku brad
i also just got a weiand xcelerator intake for it... so now that narrows down what im needing... ill just get the rear gear to match... 308 stock e7te's crane conical valve springs roller rockers (1.6) T5 WC xcelerator single plane intake what cam specs? im pretty sure im gonna go with hydraulic flat tappet
the problem here is you match the valve spring pressures to the cam shaft your going to use. so if you want to stay with the crane conical valve springs, you need to know what they are intended to be used with. the different types of lifter weigh different amounts and require different springs. you need to call cranes tech line. they will tell you the best cam to use for your application. i would go with a hydrolic roller. you could go with fords "e303" cam. its a popular cam. the thing about it is its a cam desgined to work with fords fuel injection. the best thing to do is to call crane. and find out what they recomend. cam manifactures and the best experts as to what cam you should use.
