Hi. I jsut signed up to the forums. Looking for a little advice. I am looking at a 74 maverick original 302. I had a friend int he 80's who had put a 302 into his 6 cyl maverick. Like the cars. This one has an original siezed 302. Has anyone any experience rebuilding these after being siezed? I have done chev's and studebackers when I was a kid but never revived a siezed motor. This would be the great father daughter project I have been looking for. Any advice would be helpful. The body is pretty good with one dent in one rear quarter and appears to be minimal rust. Oh the asking price is $2500 canadian, which is good except if I have to buy a new motor. Haywire

    Welcome to the Forum,,,

Here in Cleveland the Cost to Rebuild that engine is about $1,250. usd. Its not a hard engine to do,, just do it rite,, from the get go,,, and you should get around 200k to 300k miles out of it,,, I use all Felpro High Pro gaskets,, and Molley rings,, Pistons are sealed power,,,, bearings TRW or Federal Mogal,, and dont Bore over, .030 ,, after that its all down hill,,, find a set of 351 windsor heads sporting the 2.02 intake valves,,, and you will be a happy camper,, Crane offers some sweet cams,,

Welcome to the board. I guess a lot would depend on how bad the motor is siezed. Not sure how hard it is to find 302's up there. Maybe some of the Canadian members will pop up about that.:Welcome:

    Thank you all

Thanks for the hello's. Question. Is $2500 a decent price for that car considering the motor is seized? In the end run I would hope to get about 300hp from the car when all is said and done but I am not that familiar with ford engines and their potential. Any canadian members have advice? Oh by the way, if the motor can be rebuilt I would prob do it myself , again not done one since about 1980 but I'm sure if I take my time shouldn't be a problem. Haywire

For a big bumper car....$2500 seems kinda high for a non-running car. The body and interior better be REALLY nice for that kind of money.

Can you post pictures of the car? If it's solid, it's worth the money, you'll save that in body work over a $1000 rot box. Mavericks and Comets in good condition are few and far between in Ontario, but 302's are a dime a dozen around here.

    pics

Dave check out pics by googling "maverick for sale calgary" and look at the kijii listing. It's light brown and looks pretty good except fo rthe passenger rear qaurter which is pushed in. I am pretty handy with body work just finished my old 92 geo metro redone for my kid. Hey 302's are a dime a dozen out there? What kind of cost to pick up a running decent 302 that me and my other daughter can build up? Also if anyone knows of a good running 302 maverick in the praries fro sale at a good price I would look at that as I could then just bus or fly and drive back? Haywire

    I'll have a look!
I've found that early 90's E-150's are a good source for 302's plus there rollers motors! and some even have AOD's!

You would need to pull the heads off the original engine to determine if it's rebuildable. That way you can figure out why it seized up. Is it seized from just sitting a long time, did it seize as a result of overheating, or did water get in it causing the cylinders to rust up? Best case is it would just need honed out upon rebuild, or just bored to the next size over. Worst case is it's been sitting with water in it a long time, which could possibly pit the cylinder walls to the point where you would just need to find another block.

I personally think Dave's idea is the way to go, just find a late model 5.0 long block to build. You can use the oil pan and all brackets and accessory's off your old engine on the new one and drop it right in.

Most likely cause was a broken oil pump drive shaft(common) If it siezed from lack of oil pressure figure on spun bearings(aligne boreing will be necessary) and the cylender bores are probably warped beyond boreing.Find a good used roller 5.0.2500 for a bad engine and questionable car?? too much.If the body is nice(i mean "nice")1500 tops.Good luck in your quest.

    Did they lower the price?
