Look's like the annual first of the year race, today, is gonna happen. Weather is supposed to be in the high 60's and high humidity. Youngest son is home on leave and we got the Mustang back together. Todd has to work today, so the Mav will stay home. My Fairmont is still "in progress". Jr. has to leave tonight, after the race's, back to Ft. Carson, Colorado. Long drive for him but he really want's to race the car he originally built and sold to Todd. Hope to get some of the 2009.00 purse, too. It will be fun either way, and my last chance to be with him for awhile.
Good luck. I'm not going to be ready until the 30th of this month for our first team race. Going to get my engine back today.
Good luck to JR. I was stationed at Ft. Carson in the mid 80s and ran a drag Car in Colorado Springs when they had an 8th mile track. I also spent many nights burning up Peoblows 1/4 mile with my army palls.
The day started out with fog. Dewpoint was so high, that the track surface was saturated and it took almost three hour's to get it in safe racing condition. This put bind on Jr. having to leave for Ft. Carson. On top of that, we had one of the largest number of car's that I can remember. 70 degree weather and cheap gas, along with a lot of racer's anxious to fire the beast's up and go fast. Being Jr. had not driven the car for over a year +, and with a newly rebuilt 306 and brand new converter, we just hoped for a little track time. With over 200+ cars in N/ E, waiting for the track to dry out, was pretty stressful for him and myself. Finally got the call for first of two time trials and as expected, had to wait in line again. Told Jr. to hold the R"s below 7000 till we see how the engine performed etc. That first burnout was pretty close to that number and he had a .510 light and ran a 7.40 with some tire spin. Another hour and half wait for the second rd. and we did richen up the alky carb a bit. Second time trial he did a John Force burnout and went way past the 7 grand I had asked to limit. Had a .540 light and ran a 7.10. Fueled it up and check things out, then waited for the first rd. of eliminations. Call came and damn thing would not turn over, discovered the tennie tiny jumper wire on the high torque starter had come off. Not an easy thing to get at in a stock framed fox body with headers. Did some "Arky" repairs to the wire and had plenty of time anyway. By now it is dark and getting colder and wetter from the dew setting in. We are both tired and antsy because it look's like a one or two o'clock finish and that would put a strain on Jr. trying to leave at his 4:00 am scheduled departure. Drew Artie Green in a very similiar Stang, who has won many big purse race's in this area. Jr. really lights up the MT's and stages just right. Bulb's come down almost alike for each car but Jr. had slipped in a mere minute amount and pop's a .493 red. Still had fun and Jr. got some rest before heading back. He has also done some racin at those same track's you talked about in Colo. Just his daily driver's though. Last but not least, "Thank You " for your service in the military.
Fun day at the track is always good. I picked up my motor yesterday. Now just need to get the energy to put it back in the car. And do a few other things. But should be ready by the EOM.
hahaha Jr doing a John Force burnout??? never.. lol He's pretty well known for that. Glad you guys had a blast up there.
