Im in the process of doing some work on my 92 roller motor. My question is i no i need to put a clockwise rotation water pump on because im running v pulleys, and no tensioner. So since im running a front sump pan now i guess now would be a good time to change the timing cover. What kind of cover do i need to get (old style 302). Or could i just drill the one i have for the dipstick..............:hmmm:

Does the timing chain cover have to be clockwise rotation because on ebay they specify either clockwise or counter clockwise ?

If your cover has the boss for the dipstick...you can drill it and install a dipstick tube and be done with it.New covers are available from sources such as NPD,ford motor sports and several others...good luck.

You'll need a std rotation cover for a std rotation pump. A std rot pump will bolt up, but the coolant ports won't match the gasket flanges. There is a reverse pump that works on a std rotation cover, but not the other way around. The cover you're looking for can be found on 86-91 Crown Vics, Lincoln Towncars and Merc Marquis 5.0's. Chances are it won't have a fuel pump boss, or if it does, you'll need to punch out the center to run a mech pump. If you're using an electric, then it won't matter. You will still need to drill the dipstick tube hole out in these later covers.

I think you need to just get a timing cover for your car. That way it will be right. You can get one from any parts house for around $100.

I would like to get rid of the big old tensioner, and the alternator set up to high. But if you have a suggestion shoot. Im all about not spending money....

I've got a pic of both style covers in my Photobucket site linked to below. They're on the second page in the middle. One's a reverse, the other a std rotation

I just went & double-checked 2 covers. One came off my '72 Grabber & the other off a customer's '91 Mustang. They actually appear to mount the same. The front seal goes in from the inside on the '72 & from the outside on the '91. The '72 also has the dipstick & the fuel pump.
