Does anyone know if the 71 Comets were body color or black under the hood? Mine is currently black but I dont know if it came this way. It was built Nov. 70 if that makes a difference. I looked at a 71 Grabber that was body color and it had never been painted. It was built Jul. 71

I know my '71 Comet's factory colour was red, and that's what colour the under side of my hood, frame, and engine bay are.

There was alot of debate about this issue awhile back. It seems to be all a case of where the vehicle was built. Now the debate was about Mavericks but I guess it might be the same for Comets too.Kansas city cars were colored as same as exterior. Dearborn cars were satin black. St Thomas cars were same as exterior.Ck out the search function and you should find all of this. Good luck.:D

Thanks for the response and info. It looks like mine was black so it will stay that way although I personally like body color.

To add more confusion, all 4 of my Mavs were built at Kansas City, and one has a factory black engine bay and the others are body color. The black engine bay car is a 70 Grabber, the others are a 72 Sprint, 72 Grabber, and 73 LDO.

My 1976 Comet's engine bay was the same colour as the exterior.

Ray, were any of yours' Dearborn cars? I have had 2 cars that were black - both Dearborn. The rest were body color.

All 70's are black ... at some point in 71 Ford switched to body color ... there apparently are some exceptions to the rule ...

every car that i have owned has been body color under the hood EXCEPT my 69.5 and u can still tell that it used to be black. so i guess to answer ur question, chances are that your Comet GT should be body color under the hood unless it was built in Dearborn, MI assembly plant

Im going to look a little closer maybe underneath some brackets and see if it might have been painted black at one time. If it was black I was thinking The 11/70 build date might have been why it appears to have been black. I have had 4 other mavericks years ago and I think the 70 was the only one that was black. This car was built at the Kansas City plant.
