Hello members of the Maverick forums, my name is Chris. This summer I worked almost every day to get my first car, a black 1974 Ford Maverick with a 302. I'm fourteen, and I know that seems young to be purchasing a vehicle, but I really wanted to get a jump on my first car. I've had my car for several months now, and I love it more than anything. There's really nothing more satisfying than using your own hard earned money to buy something you really want. It's honoring to join the ranks of all of you in owning a Mav, and while I hadn't planned what car, exactly, I'd be purchasing as my first, but I knew it would HAVE to be a muscle car. I'm very satisfied with my decision, and just wanted to share. I've pretty much just been saving all my cash to put into my baby, where I live, Layton Utah, there's an online classified site which I've used to find some parts for my Maverick. First thing I got for her was and new carburetor. I upgraded from a stock two barrel to an Edelbrock performer 600cfm four barrel carburetor, which I found attached to a 351 performer RPM intake manifold for $130. After that, I decided a new intake manifold was in order, as the 351 hadn't a snowball's chance in fitting on my engine. So I had one shipped from Washington for $95 + $35 for shipping. So, ironically, I paid the same for an intake as I did for an intake and carb. Just yesterday, I went to my local Master Mufflers and upgraded my poor, dying stock to a dual muffler system with some Flowmaster Super40's. When I went in with my father two days before, one of the representatives told me the process would set me back a total of about $570 before taxes. I decided it was worth it and gave my father the ok. To my surprise, my dad was able to get it done for under $500 after taxes, and that's with the new ends, which were $10 a peice. Even more surprising, is he isn't going to make me pay him back. My father really is a nice guy. I think the reason may be that they decided to join the ending pipes together at the right, rather than having them come out at seperate ends like you would normally expect and never spoke to us beforehand. I don't mind, though, it's a rather suiting look for the maverick, in my opinion. You know, the whole experience of getting and fixing up my own car has been a rather altering one. My dad's been extremely supportive of my decisions, and I think he even enjoys riding around in my car when he gets the chance. Even though I made him promise this is my car and I'd be the one paying for everything, he's the one who paid $500 to get it lifted down from Seattle. This Maverick was probably the best purchase I've ever made, and I'm sure many of you could agree with that statement. Total, I've put about $2,000 into this car, my dad's put about $4,000 and my brother has put in a good $3,000. (Before you ask, I bought the car off my brother for $1,500 and I've spent almost $500 on a new intake and carb, and he bought it for $2,000, did some work on the body and my dad put in $3,000 for the hood and paint job, and another $1,000 for the mufflers and shipping the car down from Washington.) Although my car is probably only worth about $4,000-$6,000, I don't mind how much work has to be put into it, or how safe it is to drive or anything like that, I'm just glad I own it. Anyway, thanks for listening, or rather, reading what I have to say and I'm definatly glad I'm amongst so many people who understand how awesome Mavericks are, especially because none of my friends know what a Maverick is.
It is great having you here and congrats on the car! You are very articulate for a 14 yr old and that is a welcome thing to read. Maybe it will rub off on some of us here. Post up some pics of your car if you get a chance.
It's good to see someone young like you with an interest in these old cars, and old cars in general. Your generation will keep them alive after we are all gone. They're several younger guys here also, at least a couple in their late teens and early 20's that I have had the pleasure of meeting and am proud to call my friends. Anything you need to know, just ask, as there will probably be somebody here that has done it, wants to do it, or has done it and wants to forget about it! Post up some pics when you can, we enjoy looking at them!
from Florida, I'm glad you found the forum. You will make a lot of friends here. we all have a passion for our cars. You will learn more about mavericks and comets here than anywhere else. Ken
First car coming along At last!!! My goal has been achieved someone else in Utah (about 17 miles from me) appreciates the Beauty and Power that is Comet/Maverick, maybe you could have your dad give me a call (801-479-3231) I’d love to see it. I’m off work Jan 1 through 4 and If the roads are clear of snow and ice I’ll even drive my 74 Maverick Grabber Clone over and maybe some pics of my 72 Comet GT I once had and loved or is that loved and had.
Welcome to the board! We are all glad you found us. It sounds like you are making excellent progress with your Maverick.
to the board. Always great to have more Mavericks, from the great NW. Maybe you'll be able to talk your Dad into driving you & the Maverick, to Seattle, for our MCCI Mini Meet, in July 2009. The more Mavericks/Comets the merrier....
Thanks guys, it's nice to have a welcome wagon. As a fourteen year old, I'm usually told I'm too young and it becomes difficult to voice my opinion and I end up have an uneasy time settling in with most members of forums. I'll be sure to put up some photos of my Maverick soon, however they may not be very pretty as I've only got my cell phone for pictures. Again, it's nice to be here and I hope to spend a lot of time with you all.
to the forum!!! i was 14 when i got my Maverick too. i'm now gonna be turning 16 in a month and i can't wait to get my license love to see some pics of your car! and like "MercuryCruizers" said check into the forums every now and then and maybe you can make it to one of the Meets. always great to get younger members my age who love Mavericks!
Hmmmm I remember saying something like that to you a little while ago but I live 17 miles north in Brigham City instead of south towards Layton.
First car Hey markso125 maybe we should both drive over a mini Maverick/Comet meet of sorts, and I remember your comment thanks. I just almost never go north in Utah except for Lotto tickets in Malad Idaho.
