Yup you got a 74, they are both part of the seatbelt start system used in 74. Your seatbelt must be on before you are able to start the car. The button (if I remember correctly) is for when you are working on the engine. You can depress the button and allow the car to start without having the seatbelt enguaged.

you can take that out, and just short the wires under it. Splice them together so it thinks the button is pushed.

Mine never worked. At least not while I owned it.

There is also a huge yellow box (usually yellow, sometimes other colors) under the dash that goes with all of this, so when you get in to install a radio, expect to have THAT in the way. Has about 40 wires going in to it.

I guess before we get to carried away, what you need to do is put a jumper in under the dash if I remember correctly this bypasses all of the crap and then you can just remove it. I did it on my brothers 4 door but that was years ago if you look you can find the wiring schematic for 74 or ask some of the other members who have done it recently they can probably tell you better than me. They only did it on the 74 model year so comparatively it is not on too many cars.

I don't remember it being too difficult...do a search on the forum and you should find out how to remove it all.

EDIT--I did a search of one of my posts from a couple years ago, and it looks like I spliced the wires at the button, and was able to remove the boxes without any problems.
