    Hi Everyone,

I have joined the forum for my son who just bought a 1972 Mercury Comet. Do you know where he can get parts at a reasonable price. He needs a power steering control valve and we live near Tampa, Florida. Any help would be appreciated.

    Welcome aboard! :Handshake
There are quite a few members down your way. We are having a Maverick/Comet get-together in Silver Springs January 10th, 11th at the big National Depot Ford Show. You guys should try to make the show. You'll meet most of the local guys...and some of the not-so-locals. :)

    Welcome to the board!

Nice to see another Comet and another Floridian. ;) I am just down the road in Dunedin.

I too, have a 72 Comet. The power steering systems Mavs and Comets are over-boosted (too light - no road feel) and tend to be a continuous pain in the neck. I was replacing the return line on mine twice a year, never could find a durable way to fix it.

My advice here is to drop the power steering... switch it to manual steering. To do this you need to get the center link from a car set up for manual. I have seen these being sold NOS on eBay, too. You can keep the PS steering box. It is fewer turns lock-to-lock, and you end up with a good road feel. It take a bit of arm to parallel-park, but otherwise it is fine. (I'm 6'1", 195 lbs) If you feel like you need more leverage, you can switch to a manual box, but it is a lot of turns and feels too light IMO.

Another consideration is that if you get rid of the power steering, you will need to change the belt arrangement.

If you do a search on the board here, you will find many other members that hold a similar opinion here.
