If you grind all the hardware off, shorten it (or change your wheels) weld spring perches to it and get a new driveshaft or u-joint, sure.

Early Mustang stuff fits without mods, but any 8.8 will require work. Explorer is the closest to fitting and you still need to move the spring parches and address the width issue.

I am not sure which ones are offset and which aren't (if any aren't)...
However, there are issues with at least some 8.8" rears that the center section is offset to one side.

    Just a heads up.

Rangers and Explorers have the offset 8.8" rearends.

Yeah, about 4" offset. People have used them unmodified with higher wheel backspacing, or shortened one side and used two short axles. I plan to do this at some point, and when I do I'll most likely have an offset chunk. Unless I get ambitious, and that could happen too.

    Another heads up:
The 8.8" rear is heavier than a 9"
    and
The 8.8" rear has C-clips, which can be dangerous.

Now if you want a heavy rear without C-clips, you can mod the rear to eliminate them.

My point is that if you are going to narrow a rear to fit, and move around spring mounts and shock mounts... Why not do all that to a 9" housing and have a rear that is stronger and lighter? My .02

Exactly. The only reason I'm looking at an Explorer 8.8" is I already have the wheels it would need to be the perfect width as-is. All I'd have to do is move the perches. If I had to heavily mod a rear I'd do a 9. Hell if I had the money to do that I would just get a Track-Loc carrier and some gears for my 8, which is plenty strong for most people, definitely me.
