What would be the best thing to do, rebuild or buy a new rear end... mine is starting too howl and I would like to know what gears would be best for it? 3.55 or so ? How much does this usually cost etc for posi also..

    rebuild it

We have the technology and we can rebuild it better. Rearend you have now, fits, keep it. Get a 8" Auburn posi unit with 3.55 gears. Rebuild everything from the axle seals to the pinion nut. Easier to rebuild what fits then try and get something that "might" fit.

I agree with RickyRacer, however if you're on a tight budget, simply get another 3rd member from a junkyard for dirt-cheap and bolt it in. Just make sure that the gear ratio is at least the same as what you currently have.

    --OR--

Some Pintos and Mustang-IIs had 3.40s and 3.55s in them, which is a great performance improvment over the stock 3.00 or 2.79 ratio that the Maverick 8-inch came with. Don't forget to install the correct speedometer drive gear in the tranny for speedo accuracy...

Nope I have already done that once already I am going to get new stuff... I was just wondering which gears really... cause I always here how 3.73 and 4.11 are good for auto mustangs. It is starting to push the gas milliage though.

    rearend

axle bearings, seals = $55 appx. carrier kit =$100 appx, new gears=$155 appx, posi unit=$350-400, labor=$200 appx. Call Currie and see what they want for a 3.55 posi unit then just do the axles.

I beat you to it. Currie is 5 minutes from me.

they want $857 before taxes for the entire third member, 3.55 gears/posi

    Is that a lot??

    rearend

Well I bought a 9" Currie rearend from them back in Dec. 89 and then toured their shop several years ago. Very impressed with their workmenship and customer friendly service. As for axles, Currie will make you up a set of forged steel axles, using your old ones as a pattern. Probably cost around $300, but you ain't goin break them. Money well spent. Install them and forget about them. Nice insurance to have.

    $$$$

As for the $857, that is a very good price with gears, bearings, posi and labor.
