Ok got the new Fuel Sending Unit installed unfortunatley problem still not fixed. The gauge reads exactly at 1/4 tank when it should read empty, at least it no longer reads at almost 1/2 tank like the old unit did. I dunno what else could be the problem, the IVR maybe? I'm bout ready to pull the instrument cluster out and replace it but that probably wouldn't work either knowing my luck. Sometimes I feel like taking the whole car apart. Guess i'll treat 1/4 tank as empty for now til I fix this whenever that is.

I ran into a similar problem earlier this week. Installed a brand new sending unit from Auto Krafters -- it reads higher than it should as well. It read just under 3/4 and took 7 gallons. About 1/4 too high. Was the sending unit you installed new or used?

Brand New, I had to tweak with it a little bit to get it to install didn't wanna go in cause the two prongs didn't line up correctly with the notches in the tank (neighbors probably got an earful from me swearing like a trucker at that point). Used a pair of slip lock pliers and fixed that problem, I know thats not the reason for the off reading though.

That could be the reason for your off reading, because the fuel sender has to be placed in the tank "just so" so that it reads correctly. Not saying that is the reason, but could be.

Try changing the instrument voltage regulator. When those go bad, the gas tank will read high. After that, the only thing left to change would be the gas guage in the dash itself.

Guys; I have a similar problem, but it is the gauge itself that is my problem. I have a spare, that reads good, but I put this newly painted instrument cluster in, and the gauge reads 3/4 tank when it is full. I am going to change the gauge this weekend, and I will let you know how it does. Just consider it before buying a new IVR or sending unit.

Unfortunatley it's too late for me on the Sending unit, just as well though it would have been a problem i'd a had to deal with in the future. As for the IVR I was planning on doing a junk yard run later this week hopefully i'll find another Maverick out there that still has one intact, I'll probably just replace the whole instrument cluster I got one of the old basic ones that just has a speedometer, fuel gauge, and dummy lights nothing more should be a simple replacement providing I can find an exact match off another Mav. I'm thinkin maybe i inadvertanetly messed the current one up when I removed it awhile back trying to get at the Heater Controls to fix them if thats the case I'm gonna be seriously steamed I went through all this trouble for nothing,, *Sigh* oh well live and learn.

The gauge is bad, Find another one and replace it. I had the same problem wit a '75 Comet I used to have. When changing the sending unit didn't help, I replaced the gauge and it worked great...

Nope it wasn't the gauge, it was the Instrument Cluster Regulator. I put one in today that I got out of a 71 Comet in the Junk Yard along with that plastic circuit piece it's attached to and once I got everything back together and turned on the ignition the gauge moved up slightly and stopped at E (right where it should be cause there isn't any fuel in the tank) so it's fixed now I hope. The ultimate test will come when I put some gas in the tank. I did take the Fuel Gauge out of that Comet when I got the Regulator so if the gauge does turn out to be bad or if it ever goes out in the future I have a spare :).

Added some Gas (bout 1 gallon) gauge still didn't move but I don't figure 1 gallon on an empty tank is gonna budge it anyways. All seems ok with the exception of I still don't have any dash lights when I turn on the lights, the red light comes on though (the brights indicator on top of the Speedometer). Beginning to think either I have bad bulbs (cause some of the dummy lights don't work either) or it's the Light Switch itself, someone here told me awhile back the switch could be the problem looks like they may be right. Any thoughts?
