Check out the cover .... I knew about his Mustang Funny Cars in 1969 but don't think I have ever seen this Maverick FC.
There's also an article on him in this month's Hot Rod or Popular Hot Rodding. When you reach my age it's hard to remember the difference.
I remember reading a book about his life back in the 60's when he was heavily into Baha racing. Quite an impressive story then. I will have to check this new one out.
It is a big article in Hot Rod this month ... this and an earlier biography were cited as references. I knew he had his hand in a lot of things but you can just about double what I was aware of ... they said he only slept 3 or 4 hours per night ... you would have to in order to achieve all that he did. Amazing guy!
Your right about that Captain, I met a guy on the phone that had a auto repair shop in L.A in the 80s.We were discussing Mustang 2 front ends. At that time he had thompsons blue 69 mustang funny car. He was conveting the headlights over to a 70 model and a BB Cebbie for Super Comp! And he was a Ford Guy! Go figure that one! As for Thompson, what a tragic way to die like him and his wife did, Horrible. Had to PISS-OFF somebody to go that way.IMO Al
His business partner in the stadium off-road events was a huge cheat and after many, many years was finally convicted of arrange their murders (just last year or the one before). They are still looking for the two hit men that actually did it. I would imagine that things were about to get really ugly and lawsuits were about to be filed prior to the killings.
Thats good to hear. justice is being served. His partner, was that mark blackwell?, if I remember correctly? Could you just imagine if Mickey was alive today how HUGE he would be. Look at the marketing aspect alone that we take for granted today. Thompson was way ahead of everyone on that one. His name is still a big endorsment today, and hes been dead, what 20 years now? Amazing. R.I.P. Mickey. You will always be the MAN.... Al
I bought the book. After quickly looking through it I see alot of pictures that I remember from the one I read back in the 60's. I have to go sit at a hospital for 4 hours next Tuesday so I am saving it for then.
He was and always will be to me one of the prime forces in all of performance car and truck stuff. What a man!!! Dan
Read the book yesterday while the gf went through her treatment. Great book!!!!! Wish I still had my copy of "Challenger"
