Has anyone installed a set of Trick Flow Twisted Wedge heads in their maverick? I was wondering if there were any problems with spark plug fitment and headers clearance because of their relocated valves and spark plug angles.
I have a set of trick flow twisted wedge. I have tried some shortie headers and they didnt fit, not because of the spark plug (that was ok) but because the header was made with an oval port and it would not clear the lip on the head over the port, They were made by patriot and were 1 5/8 tubes. I think 1 1/2" tubes would be too small for the trick flow ports and most shorties are 1 1/2". I have looked at headman headers and I think they would have the same problem, also I called headman and they stated that they would not fit. (I think there is a person on the board with Headman elites and trick flow heads it was a tight fit, and he had to grind a spark plug socket to be able tighten up his plugs.)I have not tried the Hooker comps or super comps although Hooker stated that they will work with the trick flows. I have a set of Mac headers for a 64-70 mustang I am not sure if they fit and Mac has never tried to fit them in a Maverick/Comet. So I am the guinnie pig. I will let you know.
The reason I didn't buy Hookers is because I don't like the drop bracket for the power steering and most people have a problem with the pitman arm clearance. I was going to buy Headman elites but I wasn't thrilled by the round port shape and both Hookers and Headman have ground clearance issues. The headers I had purchased were supposed to be mid length headers but were in fact shorties.(I have returned them) I haven't tried to fit the Mac headers but they are not supposed to interfere with the power steering bracket and ground clearance is also better. I've seen them installed in a early mustang and the fit was great. If I was after max power I would use Hooker super comps or maybe use the 1 3/4" Hookers for a 351 and the adapeter plates like others have done but that is not really the goal of this car.
i have a set.. just never put them on.. i've mocked up the headres with the heads and the headers i have on both cars will stilll get in the way of the number 7 and 8 cyl. you'll have to either grind the sparkplug hole like someone said or be like me with the roush heads and just use a pair of pilers to tighten them i do know that gsjohnson had a set with late model heads on his maverick and they have no problems.. i think they were dynomaxes. you'll need to ask for the part number if hes still on these boards. but i'd like to know as well hwo they do work when you get them in.
Whoops, i lied...i actually have hedmans (the cheap ones). I don't have any problems with any sparkplugs, although i do usually put my sparkplug socket on and tighten it with a wrench for almost all cylinders (welcome to the wonderful world of mavericks).
