It all depends on what you want. I have always liked the idea of a 7500rpm or more screamin 289 soilid lifter cammed motor. However to be practicle I built a newer roller 5.0l 302 that makes all it's power by 6500 or less.......:bananaman By rebuiling what you have now it would be cheaper unless your block and crank are a total waste.
72 Comet, they started using net HP figures instead of gross in 1972. Also, the K code 289 WAS available in 1963 and 1964, but it wasn't common. Shelby Cobras got many of 'em, and the occasional Fairlane and Cyclone GT. They really weren't meant for the big cars, and they weren't as common until the Mustang arrived in April of 64.
MaxPower, I stand corrected, I guess. Nothing I read last night agreed with the 1963..But oh well..Scotty P
Check out www.powerheads.com they have some pretty impressive flow numbers from cnc ported 302/351 heads and their price are comparable if not better than having a set done by a reputable shop. if thats what you're after is more performance from less expensive alternative than aftermarket heads. good luck in your Quest.
I think the best heads for the money right now are the GT-40P's. You can pick up a set for a couple hundred, as they came stock on the explorers and mountaineers, etc. They also make larger valves for them, i saw a set on ebay for $100 (name-brand). So you're looking at under $500 with machine work. Supposed to be very good heads. They'll fit on a maverick but supposedly it's difficult to put in spark plugs (run some good platinums and you won't have to worry about it).
I will have a set of 71 351 w heads for sale in a week or so. They have bigger valves then the 302 heads, exhaust has been ported and gasket matched, new guides, seats and valve job a couple years ago, screw in studs and guideplates. I am only asking $250 but shipping might be expensive.
