What kind of cam? Sounds like either a materials issue (steel cam w/iron gear) or the gear isn't located properly on the distributor shaft.

Double check what gear matches the cam. The material may be wrong or the mesh of the gears. I had to get a special gear for my roller cam. Good Luck!

if it has a roller cam you need a steel gear, most 302's made after about 1985ish

flat tappet cams use an iron gear

id imgine at this point the cam gear on the cam may need to be looked at to. to make sure they havent been eating at one another

Also check to make sure they installed the camshaft retainer plate behind the cam timing gear. Roller cam needs a steel distributor gear, flat tappet cams use an iron gear.

And if it is a roller cam, the best way to get the gear is on a remanufactured dist from Autozone. But only if runnnig factory electronic ignition.

There are a lot of SADI core roller cams that don't need a steel gear.

Right on there! Check with cam maker to see what gear is needed, proper measurement on shaft, and MAKE sure you lube gear up before installing
