I want to change my rear axle on my inline 6 200-ci 71 maverick, but the problem is that I don't know anything about rear axles. I just decided to change them because my neighbor told me if I want to drop a 302 or any v8 engine I have to change the rear axle or it might pop off? what do I need to change my rear axle and where can I get the things I need.?
how much HP you plan on running? if its something mild i wouldnt be worried at all i just yanked the straight 6 out of my 72 and dropped in a 351W and im going to run it with the stock 4 lug rear axle with the fullest of confidence in its ability to handle it but unless you plan on yanking the front end of the car off the ground when you hit the gas i think you'll be ok. the rear found in v8 mavericks wasnt too much diffrent then that of a 6 cyl car. sure there were a few diffrences but nothing that would make or break it. the 5 lug bolt pattern on the early v8 cars was really the only advantage or diffrence
The axles in these cars are the same as what's in a 9 inch. Your not going to have any problems as long as you have a relatively mild engine and don't go side stepping the clutch at like 5,000 RPM.
