I've notice that when I start my car the alternator light stays on, I rev the motor a little bit the alternator light goes out. When i drive on the highway the alternator gauge goes all the way over to 16, and then drops down to 10...This repeats itself the whole time I Driving on the highway. Do I need a voltage regulator?
If you have a volt meter check your battery it should be putting out about 14 volts. Than turn everything on lights, heater everything and check the battery. If its draining than you need a voltage regulator. It could also be the alternator.
Building the new car I read alot of electrical books. The maverick alt light works like this. With the key on 12v are sent to the alt bulb out the other side and to the alt. with the alt not moving this system in grounded the light is on. Once the alt is spinning and producing a charge the ground is now 12v and the bulb goes out, no ground. Knowing that I would say your alt is not charging or intermitly charging. Most autoparts stores can test it out of the car. They can test the voltage regulator too.
Before you have the alternator checked make sure your belt is tight - alternators need to run good and snug to produce that electricity. check to make sure the chassis is grounded and that the ground to the regulator is good and clean too. Clean the battery cable ends and battery posts so they are bright and shiny.
