The white Maverick is an air conditioned car (but the air is not working right now, needs to be re-charged) so the climate controls are a little foreign to me. I really just want to get a little fresh air to come out of the vents (which is easy with a non-air conditioned version). What I've noticed is, if I have the control knob on one if the selections, I hear a constant "hissing" coming from under the dash. I'm sure there is a vacuum leak, but how's a person to diagnose/repair something like that?

Also, since there is no "vent" setting, where should I have the selector knob set to just get some fresh outside air to flow?

Thanks for any tips you can offer.....

the "fresh air" setting is on a knob on the end of a handle on the door...turn it left/right untill the desired amount of fresh is reached...:D

yeah, yeah, yeah, lol, I know that!

But what I mean is, with the non-air cars, they have the fresh air "vents" on the lower part of the dash that will almost blow your hat off. With this air conditioned car, how do you get any decent "air" through those vents.....

I think most of the time it is the control switch itself that is leaking. The early ones are metal, the later ones are plastic. Not sure if that makes a difference or not, but I have an NOS early one saved just in case. My 77 would do that too, and moving the control lever would make it stop. It was annoying, but apparently not annoying enough to fix. :D

There are also lots of hoses under the dash that could be leaking as well.....depending on where the selector is positioned. I would say if your car's air flow will switch from defrost...to dash vents....to floor....then the selector switch is working correctly and you have a hose that has popped off sowhere under the dash...or there are some vacuum motors that are leaking that operate the doors.

From what I can tell, it's hissing on any setting except "off", but it does seem to be functioning (switching from heater to defrost anyway, have not been able to get much air from the vents, but is that because the air conditioner's not working?). Looks like I've got to stick my head under the dash and see if I can figure out the source of the noise. These cars with air are really cramped behind the dash.....
