Wish you were close. I would swap Maverick for Torino any day... 70-71 for sure, 68-69 possibly. I am still kicking myself for not scraping up the money ($3000) for that 68 SCJ 428 fastback Fairlane about 10 years ago. I let that deal get away, then almost instantly after, the muscle car market went to the moon. Oh, enough yaking... WELCOME!
thanks all.thats is what I am looking to do. make some kind of a trade, the torino is a 71 hardtop.Jesse
I have the car, but pulled the engine long ago. The vinyl top rotted the roof. It is waiting on a transplant... one of these days. I did the engine swap on a whim. It was the first C swap I did into a Maverick. I had done a 71 Torino 302 to C swap, so I learned alot on that one. I took a nasty little 306 out of the Maverick and replaced it with a bone stock 351c. The 306 was a screamer and ran a wide ratio toploader with 4.11 gears. The low geared tranny with 4.11s were too much even for a Cleveland, being it was bone stock. So it drove like a dumptruck. It felt like you would only go 10 feet forward before it was asking for the next gear. Rather than swap out tranny and gears to accomodate the engine, a buddy of mine was cryin' for the engine to put in his 70 Mach, and made an offer I couldn't refuse. It was a 70 correct Cleveland... So the engine went after only a few months in the car. If the Cleveland was built a little, it would have been a monster. I helped a buddy install a 2v 351, but that car was ultra mild and made a great cruiser. He ended up selling it off and I moved away. Don't know whatever happened to that one.
thanks,I did a 71 comet gt with a cleveland before, but never drove it. I have a set of the tubular auto headers and they ran into the steering so I never drove it. A guy here in town cut his towers back and used 70 mustang headers.
Fwiw: I had a set of these. They are Tubular Automotive. Kar Krafters sells them at a markup. Go to the source and they will be expensive, but not quite as much. They make them for 8.2" or 9.2" deck heights and 2v/4v exhaust flanges. If you ask in advance, they are flexible with tube sizes too. They accidentally sent my first set as an 8.2" set (Boss 302)... They can make those up to 2.125" tubes! The taller block, 9.2" Cleveland, can only go to 2"... Off the shelf without asking, you will get 1.875" tubes. Stock manifolds work too, but you have to grind some spots smooth. They will NOT work with a manual tranny though... don't ask how I know. If you run an auto tranny, you can grind these type bumps, lumps, and ridges off the manifolds and use them. Here's how my 75 sits today... Sad state of affairs.
We were typing at the same time... Did you use the early Stang engine mounts like required for those headers? They move the engine just a bit from stock for added clearance. Or at least that is the theory... IIRC, they raise the engine about 1/2" over stock Maverick mounts.
no I didnt, they never told me that. I was on the phone with them alot. the last guy I talked to there told me to heat the centerlink up and bend it.
