High on my list of priorities is getting rid of the points distributor. Where can I get an electronic one? Is there anything else I can/ need to upgrade at the same time?

    Why not use a Pertronix?

    Good idea...
Slap a Pertronix in there and be done with it.

    I've had a few
Until you accidentally leave the key on and burn it out. Or it just randomly burns out while your driving. I burned one up with only 6 miles on it once. Never again!!

Go to the auto parts store and order a distributor, ignition module, cap, rotor, wires and a coil for a 1980 Mustang with a 200 I6 (assuming you have an I6, you didn't mention). This will get you the parts you need to convert your car to electronic ignition. Or you can go the junkyard route if you want chaper, any '77-'83 Ford or Mercury car with a I6 will have the parts you need.

I've left my key on a few times, still works for me. I don't know anyone thats had one go out on them, now Duraspark boxes are a different story.

Sorry I didn't mention- I have a 250 I6. Will the mustang parts still work? What's the skill level for the conversion?

And I am still running the original duraspark box on my Stallion. But if my Stallion was originally equipped with points I would still have it that way. I have never had a problem with points and still have several cars with them and no plans of changing them.

Yea, I've heard people who've ran the same one 10+ years ,too. But I'll still never have another one.

Did you have one of the Pertronix 2s?

I heard plenty about those being junk.

The original Pertronix is known for being reliable.
    Just curious...

I have only used one Pertronix. It is in an industrial engine I own, and has served severe duty conditions for 10+ years in that engine.

I've been running this thing for nearly a year and I couldn't be happier with it. Even have an MSD box feeding the coil, no problems. Best $80 I ever spent. (y)

Although people who recognize it as a GM type distributor will either think it's the coolest thing ever or be disgusted by it. Either way it works great.

(And pardon my filthy engine compartment in those pics - it's come a long way since then)

I'm glad somebody agrees with me. I enjoy having something that I can actually work on, and not have to do a gazilloin tests to find out whats wrong.
