So my newest Mav has AC. I haven't tried it out yet, but I have a few questions before I do anything.

    1) The freon in is is probably shot right? Is it tough to recharge the system?

    2) Will it effect anything if I close off the cowl vent? (I plan to do this because i think it looks cool, but to avoid any leakage issues in the future) Seems like it might render the AC useless..

Freon doesn't ware out, thats the problem with the ozone layer (in a round about way) if the system is low, the compressor might cycle on and off, if it's void of "freon" (refrigerant) it won't come on at all.
Not tough to recharge, but it's a waste of time and money, if it leaked out once, it'll do it again, it's best to find and repair any leaks.

ditto Dave... If you block the cowl opening off you wont get fresh air to the ac/heater from outside.thats where they pull the air from to heat/cool the cars interrior.

It'll still pull air from under the fenders, where the cowl drains, just not much, but Frank says it works just as well.

:banghead:I didnt think about the drains.I figure you have to be getting less volume that way though :hmmm:Seems the system is more efficient when it gets more air:huh:hey whatever works right..

There's a product out there called Freeze 12. Works real well for old R12 systems. My 73's A/C compressor was engaging but not blowing cold. Shot some Freeze 12 in there in May and it's been blowing cold ever since.

Ah, so a leak would be the problem if there was a lack of freon. Good point on the waste of time. I'll see if it'll kick out some air tomorrow.

Hmmm. Is there any way I can block the vent off temporarily to test it? Like with cardboard maybe?

Don't use anything that'll peal the paint (masking tape should be fine), the cowls are galvanized, sometimes the paint didn't stick well, find a magnetic sign, like off a service van, not mine but off a service van and try that.

my A/C is ..i don't know if it is from the...cowl delete...or the fact that.
...i plugged the vac. hose that opens the...fresh air door...when you turn the A/C on...this way it recirculates the inside air.
the problem my wife (that I love...berry, berry much) has with it...she has to wrap up in a blanket if i put it on med.

    ...:yup:...

One note on the leak. Lots of AC systems will hold freon as long as its running. When the system goes unused for awhile, it will leak down, typically the front seal.

Not saying that is the case, but if it was sitting, it may not have a problem.
