When trying to start a 75 Mav with Duraspak the engine is turning, but will not start. The starter solenoid is smoking. Any ideas on what to check? I hate electrical problems!!!! Thanks Bob
Could be low battery power, poor connection, bad starter. Do you have a volt meter so you can check the voltage at the battery when you try to start it?
i had the same problem on my 70 mav so i cleaned the battery and it was low on volts so i charged it and went rite away hope you get it fixed good luck
Thanks for the replays. History: I bought the car a few months back and it wasn't getting a spark so I rewired the Duraspark last weekend and I was able to get a spark. I used a test light on #1. I figure the car sat at least six months. 1. The distributor is using the smaller cap not the wider one. 2. The engine is turning which makes me think the starter is ok. 3. I plan on checking the wiring to the starter 4. A new battery was installed with new cables Questions: 1. What should the voltage be at the battery when trying to start? 2. Anyone have a diagram on where the wires go from the solenoid? Thanks again for the help!! Bob
on any nornal car the voltage should be at like 14.3 or 14.5 in my knowing i would think about replacing the voltage regultaor if anything i hope this will help you best of luck my maverick buddy peace out homedog LLLLLOOOOOOLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!
While starting, the battery voltage should not drop below about 9 volts. While running, it should show anywhere from 13.5 to about 14.5 showing that the system is charging. If it drops below 9 volts, you have low battery power. You need to charge it fully and have it tested. If it holds above 9 I think you'll find a problem in the starter or a connection problem.
