Hi everybody!!!! It´s time for a new stupid question from me, I just wonder if it´s possible to remove the steering wheel without that "special tool" I read about in chiltons and shop manuals, and also if I will need a new locking nut when I reassemble it..? Thank you for the support!!!!! Robert.
Yes to tool ... no to a new nut ... Steering wheel pullers can be borrowed for free from local auto parts stores ...
I use a air hammer with a center punch, carefuly. I leave the nut on just a couple of turns so the wheel don't hit me in the mouth (again).
The "special tool" is nothing special and probably could be had for 10 bux in it's most simple form... Which is fine for pulling a steering wheel. Dad always said "Use the right tool for the job". ... I guess that is why he had about 12 versions of this puller! I am going through his stuff now that he has passed, and I don't know what half the tools he had do. Sorry for getting off subject...
the first time i did it that way...i had the nut all the way off... "every action has a reaction" you don't want to have the BFH in your hand after you've hit yourself in the mouth with it... ......
Remember he is in Sweden, he can't just go down to the local auto parts store for everything. I have pulled many wheels by the apply pressure / apply BFH method, and yes leave the nut on. This method is much easier with a second person.
Comet666, in case you were wondering, "BFH" is a technical term meaning "Big F!cking Hammer." That works fine, and I did the same recently, but another way I've done it without having a puller tool available is to put a couple of bolts in the holes next to the center of the steering wheel, then pry against those with a claw hammer or crowbar, using the center shaft as a fulcrum.
Must be the too drunk and weak swede that did not pull this off, I tried (my girlies hands on the steering wheel) with my hands on the block of wood and an axe (not the sharp side ain´t no lumberjack yet) but I guess I was to afraid of smashing something that I can´t get my hands on as easy as you guys can, thank you so much but I guess I´ll have to ask Scoop (again and again) to get me a tool, even went to the parts store to ask him and he told me to manufacture one at some workshop somewhere, then I asked him for a bulb for my license plate light and he tried all kinds of different ones and then said.... "you always come around with all these kind of strange questions and we can never get you anything, we like you but you do need to get a volvo or something... :16suspect).... Thank you all, you are the greatest!!!!! Robert.
A while ago I saw thread that you guys posted about the "BFH" and I printed it out and put it on my wall by the computer, must have been one of the most hillarioys things I´ve ever read!!!! Thank you so much!!!! Robert.
Hey, It's no different around here, trying to deal with an 18 year old kid at the parts store, that was born 13 years after the last Maverick/Comet was built. Try and find a pulley puller that uses bolts, you can thread then into the hole in the steering wheel. I can take some pictures if that will help, so atleast you know what they look like...
You can make a puller! a block of steel at least .5 inches (12 - 13mm) thick. measure the distance from one side of the two holes in your steering wheel to the near side of the other (center to center distance). On the block of steel find the center (approximate) and center punch it. Set a compass (for drawing circles) at 1/2 the center to center distance of the holes in the steering wheel and draw a circle using the center punch mark as the center of your circle. Draw a line from one side of the circle to the other making sure that it goes through the center punch mark at the center. Now drill two 7mm holes - one each where the circle and line cross. Drill the center hole large enough for a .5 inch (12-13mm) bolt to slide through. Get two bolts that will be long enough to thread into the holes in the steering wheel and one that will go through the center that will be long enough to get a nut under it. With the steering wheel nut threaded on but loose, put your puller over the wheel and thread the two small bolts into the wheel. Place a thin steel plate over the nut at the center and the nut for your center bolt over it. Slide your large center bolt through the puller and thread it into the nut. Turn the nut counter-clockwise untill there is some pressure against the wheel. Rap the center bolt sharply with a hammer and it will pop loose.
