The original owner of my green Comet kept it around to tow his 16 foot boat around with, which likely weighs half as much as a car and trailer, etc. It had a frame-mounted hitch, stock drum brakes, 302/C4, and there are virtually no hills here in FL. Still, I imagine there was a big "pucker factor". The drum brakes were scary enough without towing anything.

Want a Maverick tow vehicle? It would probably be easiest to just put the whole body on a Ranchero or F250 frame.

I have though about this as an answer to by buddy's threat to put a Javelin body on the frame of his Jeep Cherokee, which is currently more rust than solid. Mine was definitely going to have 4 doors, big bumpers, and a brush bar and winch out front. :D

It's not a question of being able to go, it's being able to stop...safely.

It's dangerous and could kill someone.

Yep, that is why we are discussing the mods needed to do it safely.

I run tandem trailers for my equipment, and run brakes on both axles.
This removes almost all, if not all, stopping load from the tow vehicle. I can set the brake controller so tight that the trailer brakes will stop our diesel E350 Supers! Not good for the trailer brakes, but they will do it.
A vehicle as light as a Maverick could stop just fine with proper trailer brakes.
Of course I would still up the brakes on the Mav itself, just as I posted.
This would keep things safe in an emergency.

I guess it all boils down to how much of a value you put on your butt. I personally would not use a Maverick to pull anything. I suppose a small boat or a small single axle trailer would be doable, but that is it for me. Just like having the right tools to do a job, having the right vehicle for towing makes all the difference in how well it is done.

I know what you are saying Hawk.
It can be done right if you are thorough about it.
The real question is: Is it worth it?
    Probably not.
It would be just as interesting, and easier to do, if you were to pull your Mav with a matching year (and even color) F series, E series, or Ranchero.

    OR........a Station Wagon!! :D

Just to add to the conversation.....there is NO WAY I would use a Maverick to pull a trailer with a Maverick on it. I know how hard it is to pull with a 1976 station wagon with a 400 V-8 and factory tow package.....no way would I do it with a Maverick.

This is too odd, I was just thinking about how to tow my Mav with my Comet, today, unreal how one little thought has been so contagious. Just want to know who yawned first! I was thinking big block, especially since I just got a lead on a 67 Fairlane with a 390, running, would be a good donor car for the driveline for an asking price of $700, it got me thinking. And don't anybody complain about junking a Fairlane, this car is at least 800 lbs lighter than it should be due to MASSIVE amounts of rust. But it would be fun to see an FE in a Comet!

I planning on building a frame welded receiver/hitch on my Comet GT. I plan on pulling less than 1000 lbs (my Harley) Even so, the frame rails on these cars are pretty thin. I would not even consider pulling much more than that without some serious frame modifications first, then a good receiver/hitch. Trailer brakes sure make a difference on bigger loads.

Another thing to consider is tongue weight. As trailer weight goes up, so does tongue weight. Put about 300 lbs in the trunk of your Maverick or Comet and see what happens. You will need suspension upgrades as well. NO, NOt AIR SHOCKS!! :D

My Dad's uncle in KY use to pull a Coleman pop up camper to WV (Cannan Valley) with his 70 Maverick with 170 six cylinder. It made many 4th of July trips in to WV. :)

This is what happens when you think your car is an acceptable tow vehicle.:D

My dad's '94 F150 Flare Side with a 5.0 in it would pull his Comet on a car trailer with absolutely no problem. You could run 80 with the A/C on and could hardly tell it was back there.. The '02 F150 my grandpa had also had no problem, I towed Mavericks on both a car dolly and car trailer with that. It had a 4.2 V6 and 5 speed.

As for towing a Maverick with another Maverick... absolutely no way I would try that... Maybe if the tow Maverick was on an F150 frame or something..

Did you beef up the wagon in anyway for towing?
