Hello, Just a month ago my Father and I purchased this 1970 Maverick as a project for him and I. It's Tubbed with a cage and is sitting on Mickey Thompson slicks with centerline supertricks. We have a 302 for it and plan to get 450 hp out of it and maybe upgrade to a cleveland.
The last engine in it was a Boss 302, with a bunch of performance goodies. It ran 9.89's before the engine was removed. And the shock towers are unmodified so i gotta cut them up if i wanna put a cleveland in there. (The previous owner of this car used to fuel up the Gapp n' Roush Tiquana Taxi BTW)
Welcome to the board. Neat car. If the shock towers have not been modified you might want to use the 302 and stroke it to a 347. How fast you plan on going with it?
Well i plan to make it a street car. Will probably cut up some cleveland heads and buy a boss manifold for it. Just recently got some 351W headers that should fit a 302. Probably will just get a 351C instead of a 347. I do have a 465 big block out of an old galaxie police interceptor but that'd be overkill. So its gonna have a 302 in it around this fall but im still collecting parts for it at the time. and in a year or so it may have a 351C in it. Anyway here r some more pics
Just to let you know the 351W headers probably will not fit the 302 in a Maverick. Most of us have found that you need to have headers specifically for a 302 Maverick. Hooker 6901 is a popular one as are the Hedmann headers and Doug Thorley is now making shorty headers for a Maverick. You can do a search on the header subject. It's been discussed a lot on here.
Well, here's the headers, i also got a few other pairs, 1 pair of 302 headers came with the car gotta post some pics later.
Welcome, 70ProStreet from another Michigan Maverick owner. I am from Redford. I would guess you are from the East side. Don Graham is right about the headers. If you put 351W headers on a 302 it will drop the collectors down about an inch because of the lower deck height. I am running a 351W stroked to 421. This is one fun street motor. If you were at the Gratiot Cruise I had the yellow Maverick, which was the only one I saw there. Lee "THE MAV" Richart
