same day that i put on my new 1 bbl carb and air shocks my transmission started acting funny. When i drive it and it hits 3rd gear it starts to stutter or hiccup, its hard for me to explain but its like its fighting to go futher. It only happens in 3rd gear and i have checked the vacuum lines and tuned the carb but it keeps on doing it. any suggestions as to what might be the problem??
that new carm makes me suspecious since you mention it. i wonder if its not in tune and isnt able to provide enough fuel to the motor at that point to go any faster? maybe a fuel leak or something too? im assuming you put a new fuel filter on with the new carb so hopefully thats not the issue. if you didnt go get one.
ive had it tune twice already and still nothing, i did replace the fuel filter. it still stutters in 3rd. I was thinking maybe bad ujoints? i had driveline issues before, few years ago it fell out while i was on the freeway. i did get it fixed but mayb the joints went bad?? who knows. maybe the car is to lean or to rich. this mav chick is running out of ideas.
weirdone, If it stutters in reverse and third it may be in the transmission. Timing that is too far advanced can cause a stumble at high loads - have you checked the overall timing (with the vacuum disconnected) at 4000 rpm? It should be no more than 34-38 and the sixes like a bit less timing. The carbs an the 72 -75 run lean at freeway speeds which typically causes a "surge" where the car is difficult to keep at a constant speed. You find yourself pressing down on the gas pedal to maintain speed and then the car begins to accelerate past the speed you want so you let up on the pedal. This cycle repeats itself endlessly. This isn't what I think of as a stutter.
no my stutter only happens after i hit 3rd gear. it feels like it wants to go faster but it decelerates. this repeats it self over in over again, like a stutter. im taking it to the transmission shop tomorrow maybe they know whats wrong. im just hoping its not going out. i just rebuilt this thing 2 yrs ago.
Sounds like fuel surge to me. Try going about 2 sizes bigger on the carb jet. Might try swapping the jets from the old carb if you still have them....or drilling out the new ones a few thousandths. You can always drop a thin wire into the jet if you get it too rich. Cleaver
well the transmission shop took my car for a test drive, they dont know whats wrogn with it. They have to pull the pan off and check the throttle body, the internal vacuum lines and if the "suction cup" was put back in when i had it serviced last. i just dont know what it is. the "stuttering" only happens in 3rd gear around 50mph and gets worse as you go faster.
It sure sounds like a lean surge. It might be easier to diagnose while driving it. Don't pay for any work until it is tested on the road and it works right.

To fix a lean surge you will need to replace the jet in the carb with one that is two mumbers higher (they are stamped with a number). You can also just get a carb for a 69 or early 70 car - it will already have the larger jets in it.
ok cool. i still got the old carb because i havent traded it in for my core yet. can i check that carb for the jet number and compare it to the one in my new carb??
my old carb i think was a carter and the new one is a holley but illl see if they match up anyways, doesnt hurt to try. thank you very much for your help though!! its very much appreciated.
