Hi, By checking the engine code from the right side of the block, I have determined that I have a 1977 6 cylinder Maverick engine in my 1966 Mustang. What I don't know is whether it is a 200CI, or the 250CI. How can I identify the difference? Thanks!
Welcome! sorry I can't help you on that but doesn't it have an orange sticker on the valve cover? or air cleaner? sometimes on small letters saying FOR EXEMPLE: ENGINE FAMILY 250 CID,200 CID I only had one 6 cyl mav and it had the engine size on the air cleaner
look at the starter on a 250 it sits directly next to the oil pan. on a 170-200 it sits next to the block above the oil pan. theres other meathods to spot what one you have but thats the easiest 250 use 4 bolts to secure the water pump, 170-200's use 3 but with all the pulleys and stuff you usually cant see it anyway the 250 also uses the v8 trasnmission bell housing, so the back of the block looks really wide. smaller 6 have a smaller unique bell housing. swapping in a 250 to a mustang is pretty involved since its a taller engine that uses slightly diffrent motor mounts that have to be fabb'd up. the 170-200 is a direct swap be sure to check out www.fordsix.com too good luck
Thanks for the thoughts Chirt. I wish it were that easy. NewToFord....thanks for the detailed advice. My starter is definitely next to the engine block. Therefore, I must have the 200CI. Thanks so much for your help! It is greatly appreciated. Now, if anyone knows how to ID a transmission, I am trying to figure out if I have the original 66 C4, or the transmission that came with the 77 Maverick 200CI. Maybe that transmission is still a C4 in 1977, but I am not sure.
