Ok.. Fist hello fellow Maverick and Comet people. First a little history about me. I bought my 71 maverick from a guy in 94 for $200 and fell in love. Well I still have it and I have been looking at buying new fenders and drivers door and some other things. But today I found a 73 maverick with a new interior and supposed clean body(waiting for pics). He says it is an original 302. That would mean it has to be a Grabber right? The 302 is in pieces (no big deal to me) But is the car worth $1500? I think so if it has a good body. Just looking for some input. My dad is going to look at it this week. Also it has a cowl hood which can't be stock or can it? Thanks. Nice to see other people with my passion with these cool cars. Most people make jokes till I light them up.. Andy

Just because it has a 302 does not make it a Grabber. On the 73 look for the number 93 in the third and 4th positions of the VIN to confirm it is a Grabber. If it is a factory 302 car the 5th digit will be an F. All the Mavericks used the same flat style hood in 73.

    Good luck on the car.

OK. My dad is going to check the vin. If it is not a factory 302 car is it still worth it for the body? Thank's for the help with the vin. Now I know what to look for.

If it is a good body I believe it is worth the money. Especially in MI.

    Welcome aboard! :Handshake
If the body is good and solid it probably is worth the money. You gotta figure how much is it going to cost you to buy all of those parts (or repair the ones you have). Finding something with little to no rust is worth good money in my book. I run a body shop so I know how expensive it is to fix rust. Post pics of it and we may be able to help with better advice.

grabbers had 6 cyls too so dont let that fool you

if its a clean body i'd definatly get it.

ive never found originality with mavericks to be a big deal. if the 302 is not original and swapped in from something else i doubt it'll be any less powerfull or desierable then the original 180hp 2v 302 that would have been there stock

I agree, not a bad price if its got a good body.

If its got a 302 in it, it could be original or swapped, but either way it dont matter.

As for the cowl hood, they didn't come with cowl hoods from the factory.

Grabbers did have a special hood, with 2 "scoops" on each side, but not offered that year.

Welcome to the board. Good luck on the car. Like the others have said the vin should start with a 3 for 73. and should have a 93 for a Grabber or 91 for a 2dr non Grabber sedan. The Grabber package is pretty much cosmetic. the Grabber hood with the 2 scoops ws only offered in 71 and 72. Sounds like a good deal if it really has a new interior and good sheet metal. Most Grabbers were 6 cylinder cars.:)

Thanks' again for you input. I have been playing with Mavericks for around 14 years now and just can't seem to like anything more. It has been such a fun car to customize to my liking plus it was my first car at age 16. I have spet a few bucks and many hours searching for parts back in the 90's before the internet was big and they made all the parts. The Maverick Connection helped me out more than once. Here is a pic of my 71 Grabber
