I'm still riding on my stock 14" aluminum wheels, and they look like they were cut w/ a cnc or something, grooves throughout. I'd like to get them polished out to a high shine, instead of the satin look I'm getting now. Anybody know a shop in GA that does that kind of work? I figure once I get them polished out I can put some of eastwood's wheel clearcoat on them so they don't oxidize anymore.
wheels First the hard and cheap way: The aluminum is relatively soft and will sand down to a polished look with sandpaper. I had oxidized wheels that had the same finish and converted them to a smooth high polish. I started with 220 paper wrapped around a car wax applicator pad for the contour and went to 400, 600 and then rubbing compound and a polisher. It sounds like a lot of work but considering the small surface area and the fact the rim is circular, it is not to bad. It took me about 8 hours to do all four. Now the expensive but probally smarter way: I was told the same thing could have been achieved with a buffing wheel and various grinding/polishing rouges, which would eliminate all hand work and would take less time. Looking at some of the things that were polished at this shop, I know that my wheels would have been no big deal. The buffing and polishing place on Lawerenceville highway in Decatur Ga. I will get the name and phone number and post it in the near future. Tony
I did my wheels with a kit I got from POR-15 company. Took me 16 hours to do 4 wheels. This included clear-coating them when finished. I got the wheels for FREE out of a junk yard because of how bad they looked. This is how they looked when finished:
Sounds great! That place on lawrenceville highway couldn't be far from here, I live on 10th street downtown and I took a driver's test at taggart's on Lawrenceville Hwy not long ago. Looking forward to a name and #. Thanks guys. BTW Craig the wheels look great, but I just don't know if I have the time or want to put forth the effort to get that result!
Hmm Theres a place in Douglasville Ga called " Fosters Chrome for the street" its on bankhead hwy (also known as hwy 78) I dont have the # handy but im sure its listed. They re-chrome and also polish aluminum parts. They do good work.
Craig The wheels you got for free from a junkyard look better than the ones that junkyards in Georgia charge for. I need to come to Indiana and look around at your junkyards. Tony
found it well i found the link, left them a message. I figure they're closed on sundays. Here's their info. FORRESTERS CHROME FOR THE STREET 3990 BANKHEAD HWY, DOUGLASVILLE, GA 30134 (770) 949-8942 Thanks for the lead.
Hey Tony Hey Tony, I was just wondering if you had found the name of that metal place on Lawrenceville Hwy in Decatur. I called the other place in Douglasville and left a message, but didn't get a callback and haven't followed up. It would be a haul out there too. If you could post the name and maybe # here or email me at 72cometgt@mindspring.com I'd appreciate it. Thanks, Jonathan
metaal polishing Jonathan I will go out on Lawenenceville highway this weekend and will get the name and number for you. Tony
Hey, while you are out there on Lawrenceville Highway, stop in Lilburn at Judy's diner and tell Mike I said hi. And try the peanut butter pie... Mmmmmm.
Tony Hey tony ... i never did thank you for the lead on that Pull a Part place.. I went there a few weekends ago with my son.( lol i had to sneak him in ) But i got a real nice back seat and a 5.0 HO out of a lincon. They had 4 mavericks there two regular 73's a 73 Grabber (6 cyl) and a 76 ( that was listed as a 70 ).... lots of good glass and a few good bumpers , fenders and hoods all for cheap .... (grabber hood w/o the scoops) I dropped $18 for the seat and 4 seat rails and $100 for the HO motor which is a very good price seeing how most places want $3 to $400 bucks .... Its raining this weekend but next saturday im heading to the other one on buford hwy and check it out ... Thanks again !
