Looks like a 302 to me.... Definetly not the best picture to tell but looks a lot more like a 302 the way it fits between those shock towers. I have never seen a 351 fit that well between the shock towers without them being cut. Those shock towers don't look cut and it looks like more than a little room between the engine and the towers???? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ford...007QQitemZ170232574315QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW
Kinda hard to tell from that picture. A top pic would be better to see if the headers are really that close.
my friend has a 71 mav with a 351W and headers with the shock towers 100% stock. it is possible my eye isnt well trained enough to spot the diffrence in that pic but 351W's do have a slightly wider intake manifold then a 302 if that gives anyone a clue
looks like a windsor to me. Look at how tall his valve covers are. They are closer to the top of the shock tower than my 302 covers are and I have the tall covers to clear rollor rockers. ALso the intake does appear wider than normal.
What I can't get past is the carb. If you look at the fuel line and then the throttle linkage on the other side, it looks funny. The fuel line and throttle linkage are very close to the width of the base of the valve covers on a 302. If you were to draw a line straight down from the fuel line and linkage, it appears to be as wide as the intake. That would be 302, not 351. That carb sits WAY high too, considering it is a Performer intake. On either a 302 or 351, the carb should be nestled between the covers. I don't suppose he has a reason to lie. Just a case of the seller not putting enough pictures to properly sell his car. If the car was originally a 6, the 302 could be mounted high in the bay due to homemade or hybrid engine mounting.
I was really asking because I wasn't sure. I wasn't trying to pose disbelief. It is really not that great of a picture to try to make that judgement. I just know that the 351 engines are pretty tight with stock shock towers. The Clevland is super tight and the Windsor is not quiet as tight but tighterererer than the 302. That picture being dark and at the angle it was taken it gives the appearance of a lot more room that what I am used to seeing with a 351W
I wonder if you mounted a windsor block higher if it would give more room for header clearance? It looks like he has a spacer under the carb.
cant tell from that pic but the best way to spot a 351 w as opposed to a 302w is to look for the reinforcing rib on the block next to the distributor. The rib is on the right looking at it from the front of the engine.A better pic would help.
that has nothing to do with it, my 6208s 1 3/4 primies will fit with stock towers shock tower mod is for changing plugs, and header bolts makes life much easier.... you can tell if its a 351w by where the deck is compared to the coolant passage, if there is a gap like 1.5 inchs then its a W if there is no gap its a 302
I have done a couple of these, and my way was to install about a 1/2-3/4 spacer on top of the eng mt to set the eng higher. it worked for me.
It's a fiberglass Boss 429 Mustang repop. The orginal Boss scoop was a hair under 4" tall. The repops range from 3" to 6" tall, depending on how close the maker was trying to get to original. The 5" tall type seems to be the most common. This one looks like a 5"er.
