Mechanic in San Diego?

I moved out to San Diego recently and wanna find a good mechanic out there. Can anyone recommend a really good place that's comfortable working on our cars? I really never had a good way of gauging whether a place is good or not so I'm trying to go with your experiences.

I've done most of my work myself so this may be a stupid question but..... does a mechanic shop do engine replacement or do I have to go to a perfomance shop for that?
